PREFACE.

THE Publisher, with feelings of gratitude for the indulgence with which his former labours have been received, and not without hope that his present efforts will be attended with similar success, submits the present volume to the Public, trusting that it will not be deemed unworthy their notice; and that in it may be found something to please, and little to offend, even the most fastidious.

While endeavouring to contribute to the innocent enjoyment and rational amusement of his readers, it has been his object constantly to bear in mind that Religion

is the only source of all true happiness; and that her precepts are always most efficacious when conveyed in a form calculated to delight those whom it is her office to instruct: hence no contribution has been inserted which does not tend, directly or indirectly, to display her real effects and beneficial influence on mankind.

To all and each of his obliging contributors, the Publisher begs to express his warmest acknowledgments. He ventures to indulge a hope that he shall be favoured with a continuance of their communications; and that others, the friends of religion and the votaries of the muse, may be induced to lend their aid in sustaining and improving the character of this little work, which is already so much indebted to their kind patronage.
