Habit counts for so much in life, that it is well worth while to put forth great effort to establish right ones. Through habit we do things almost without thought. It will be the same with reading. You must not expect to be able to enjoy the very best literature at first. Nothing that is really worth having comes without effort, and as a rule the best things are hardest to get; but they are worth more than they cost.

This volume marks quite a step in advance of the last, but not longer than you will easily take. Considerable extracts are made from Cooper and Longfellow, being the two American authors that the compiler of this series has found pupils generally to enjoy earlier than any other American writers of note. There is in this volume a considerable poetry, because it is believed that a taste for poetry is acquired early in life more readily than later. It is hoped and believed that the majority of the pupils who read this book will acquire a taste for poetry and for sweet and wholesome fiction.
