William C. Bouck. The ERIE CANAL was commenced on the 4th of July, 1817, at Rome, in the county of Oneida; and the first boat arrived at New-YORK on the 4th of November, 1825.

The merit of carrying into effect this stupendous project, is chiefly due to that lamented and distinguished individual, who lately presided over the concerns of this great and flourishing state. And with this project, no longer visionary, but a solid reality, the name and fame of De Witt CLINTON will be transmitted to the latest posterity.

The following extracts from the last Annual Report of the COMMISSIONERS OF THE Canal Fund, made to the Legislature on the 19th of March, 1829, will convey some useful information.
