VER. 7.

MATT. XII. 7—10.

Εἰ δὲ ἐγνώκειτε τί ἐστιν· Ελεον θέλω καὶ οὐ θυσίαν· οὐκ ἂν κατεδικάσατε τους ἀναιτίους.

But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.

a But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance, Matt. ix. 13. Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God, xxii. 29. For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath-day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him, Acts xiii. 27.

b See on clause 2. ver. 13. ch. ix. c Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned, Job xxxii. 3. They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood, Ps. xciv. 21. For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul, cix. 31. He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are an abomination to the LORD, Prov. xvii. 15. Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you. Jam. v. 6.

VER. 8.

A. D. 31.

things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth : and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. For the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. For the Father

judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him, John v. 17-23.

VER. 9.

Καὶ μεταβὰς ἐκεῖθεν, ἦλθεν εἰς τὴν συναγωγὴν αὐτῶν.

a And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue:

And he entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a withered hand. And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath-day; that they might accuse him. And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth. And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath-days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace. And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other, Mark iii. 1-5. And it came to pass also

Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what

And they asked him, villany, and his heart will work insaying, Is it lawful to heal on the sub-iquity, to practise hypocrisy, and to bath-days? that they might accuse him. a And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Beth-el, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him. The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD. And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Entreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me again. And the man of God besought the LORD, and the, king's hand was restored him again, and became as it was before, 1 Kings xiii. 4-6. The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? Matt. xix. 3. Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Cæsar, or not? But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? xxii. 17, 18. And Jesus answering, spake unto the Lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath-day? And they held their peace. And he took❘ him, and healed him, and let him go;

Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him, xi. 54.

And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Cæsar, saying that he himself is Christ a King, xxiii. 2. Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him, 14. This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not, John viii. 6.

a The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath-day? And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him, Luke xiii. 15-17. And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath-day? xiv. 5.

a Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Matt. vi. 26. Consider the ravens for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them how much more are ye better than the fowls? Luke xii. 24.
