THE VALUE OF A GOOD NAME.

A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.1 PROV. xxii. 1.

Good name in man and woman

Is the immediate jewel of their souls.

Who steals my purse steals trash; 't is something, nothing;

'Twas mine, 't is his, and has been slave to thou

sands;

But he that filches from me my good name,
Robs me of that which not enriches him,

And makes me poor indeed.

INEFFECTUAL.

Now we know that God heareth not sinners.1

For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul? Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him?3 JOB Xxvii. 8, 9.

And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you; yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.*

The gods are deaf to hot and peevish vows;
They are polluted springs, more abhorr'd
Than spotted livers in the sacrifice.
