PREFACE.

THIS MAGAZINE was commenced, six months ago, in the interests of the Civil Service.

It was hoped that it might prove an additional bond between the various offices of the State, and aid in consolidating a body, whose members, different in their duties and social rank, live under similar conditions, and are dependent for their welfare upon the same employer.

To this end the following pages have been contributed. They bear the names of some of the most distinguished members of the Service, as well as of some hitherto unknown in the world of literature. These we offer now, in a collected form, to the Service which we, however unworthily, have ventured to represent, and to the Public, which has always been willing to support the efforts of its Servants.

May, 1869.
