JESU! the very thought of Thee,

With sweetness fills my breast; But sweeter far Thy Face to see,

And in Thy Presence rest.

Nor voice can sing, nor heart can frame,

Nor can the memory find,
A sweeter sound than Thy Blest Name,

O Saviour of mankind!

1

O Hope of every contrite heart,

O Joy of all the meek,
To those who fall, how kind Thou art !

How good to those who seek !

But what to those who find ? ah! this

Nor tongue nor pen can shew: The love of JESUS, what it is,

None but His lov'd ones know.

JESU! our only Joy be Thou,

As Thou our Prize wilt be; JESU! be Thou our Glory now,

And through Eternity.--Ancient Hymn.

O How canst thou, my soul forget
That thy whole life is one long debt
Of love to Him that on the tree
Paid back the Flesh He took for thee?

This Tree of Life wilt thou despise ?
Or not to It lift up thine eyes :
Whose fruit shall heal thy deadly wound:
Quicken, restore, and make thee sound.

Lo, how the streams of Precious BLOOD
Flow from Five Wounds into one flood !
With these He washes all thy stains :
And buys thy loss with His own pains.

Live, O for ever live and reign
Blest LAMB, Whom Thine own love has slain !
And may Thy lost sheep live to be
True lovers of Thy Cross and Thee-.Hickes.

SWEET JESUS! why, why didst Thou love

Such worthless things as we? Why is Thy HEART still towards us,

Who seldom think on Thee?

Thy bounty gives us all we have;

And we Thy gifts abuse ;
Thy bounty gives us even Thyself ;

And we Thyself refuse.

PART OF THE 51st PSALM.

HAVE mercy, LORD, on me,

As Thou wert ever kind; Let me, oppress’d with loads of guilt,

Thy wonted mercy find.

Wash off my foul offence

And cleanse me from my sin ; For I confess my crime, and see

How great my guilt has been.

Withdraw not Thou Thy help,

Nor cast me from Thy sight : Nor let Thy HOLY SPIRIT take

Its everlasting flight.

The joy Thy favour gives

Let me again obtain ! And let Thy SPIRIT's firm support

My fainting soul sustain.

A broken spirit is

By God most highly priz'd, By Him a broken contrite heart

Shall never be despis'd.
