FOREWORD

TO THE NEW EDITION

AT THE request of the Caliban Committee of Greater Boston, who have informed me of their immediate need of copies of this Masque for participants in their forthcoming production of it in Boston next June, I write this foreword to a new edition in order to make clear a few points needful to touch upon.

This new edition comprises practically the same text as that of the first edition used in the first production of "Caliban" at New York in May, 1916. The few differences consist chiefly in the omission of certain printed announcements which concerned only plans of the New York production, and the omission of certain described aspects of the Epilogue which were merely preliminary and never actually applied.

This edition, however, does not comprise the exact text of the Masque in the form in which it will be presented newly in Boston next June. It does not constitute "The New Caliban," which I have revised and reconstructed to meet the new problems and purposes of its post-tercentenary production in Boston and elsewhere.
