should shew forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvellous light. 1 Pet. ii. 9.

I commend unto you Phoebe, our sister, which is a servant of the Church, that ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, for she hath been a succourer of many. Rom. xvi. 1, 2.

A saint! and what implies the name
Oft bandied in derision's game?
Holy, and separate from sin,
To good, and ev'n to God akin.

How shall the name of saint be prized,
Though now rejected and despised,
When truth shall witness to the word
That none but saints shall see the Lord.

As faithful Stewards.

48th Sunday. A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. And he called his twelve servants, and

said unto them, Occupy till I come. Luke xix. 12, 13.

Blessed is that servant, whom his Lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Of a truth, I say unto you, that He will make him ruler over all that He hath. Luke xii. 43, 44.

Who sparingly his seed bestows,
He sparingly shall also reap;
But whoso plentifully sows

The plenteouss heaves his hand shall heap. Oh! may we watch, and work and pray, Look up, and free from fear,

Our life be all devotedness,

Till He our Lord appear.

Missionary work exemplified, in the restored Demoniac; in Andrew; in the Shepherds.

What his love hath done for you.

This sacred theme has boundless charms,
It fills, it captivates, it charms,

We'll join the bright seraphic throng,
We'll share their joys, and swell their song.

In the persecuted Christians,—Anna, Woman of Samaria.

50th Sunday.

And at that time

there was a great persecution against the Church, which was at Jerusalem; therefore they that were scattered abroad went everywhere preaching the word. Acts viii. 1, 4.

And there was one Anna, a Prophetess, and she coming in at that instant, gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of Him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem. Luke ii. 38.

The woman then left her waterpot, and went into the city and saith to the men, Come, see a man which told me all things that ever I did, is not this the Christ? John iv. 28, 29.

Taught from her youth to hate the Jews
And filled with party pride at first,
Her zeal induced her to refuse
Water, to quench the Saviour's thirst.

His words her prejudice removed,
And Jesus, whom she scorned before,
She saw and heard, believed and loved,
And ran to tell her neighbours near.

The glory of the Church in the abundant access of the Gentiles.

51st Sunday. Arise, shine, for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee; For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth and gross darkness the people; but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. Isa. lx. 1, 2, 3.
