Encouragement to Missionary Work.

18th Sunday.-Blessed are ye that sow beside all waters, that send forth thither the feet of the ox and the ass. Isa. xxxii. 20.

He that goeth forth and weepeth bearing precious seed shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him. Psalm cxxvi. 6.

They that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. Dan. xii. 3.

Ye sons of men prepare the plough,
Break up the fallow ground,
The sower is gone forth to sow,
And scatters blessings round.

Prepare us Lord by grace divine,
Like stars in heaven to rise and shine,
Then shall our happy souls above
Reap the full harvest of Thy love.

Christ promised to the heathen-An encouragement.

19th Sunday. And he said: It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel, I will give thee also for a light to the Gentiles that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth. Isa.

xlix. 6.

Look unto me and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth, for I am God, and there is none else. Isa. xlv. 22.

Jesus, immortal King, arise!
Assume, assert Thy sway,

Till earth subdued its tribute brings,
And distant lands obey.

Oh! may the great Redeemer's name
Through every clime be known,
And heathen Gods, like Dagon fall,
And Jesus reign alone.

Missionaries require wisdom and
meekness.

20th Sunday. Behold I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves, be ye therefore wise as serpents and harmless as doves. Matt. x. 16.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed. And the servant of the Lord must not strive, but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth. 2 Tim. ii. 15, 24, 25.

Mysterious union! new and strange,
The serpent and the dove!
Wisdom without the venom, Lord,
In souls whom Thou dost love.

Patient, and firm, and meek,
They glorify Thy name;

Alone Thy praise and honour seek:
Meet followers of the Lamb.

The zeal of Idolaters and Hypocrites should provoke women and children to

become Missionaries.

21st Sunday. The children gather wood and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other Gods. Jer. vii. 18.

Woe unto you Scribes and Pharisees, Hypocrites, for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him tenfold more the child of hell than yourselves. Matt. xxiii. 15.

Christians, ye prize the Saviour's blood,
In which the soul is cleansed for God;
Millions of souls in darkness dwell,
Uncleansed from sin, exposed to hell;
Oh, strive that heathens soon may view
That precious blood which cleanseth you.

The principles of Christians should excite them to the work.

22nd Sunday. O Lord, truly I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid, thou hast loosened my bonds. Psalm cxvi. 16.

Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men. 2 Cor. v. 11.

For the love of Christ constraineth us, because we thus judge, that if one died for all then were all dead; and that He died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto Him which died for them, and rose again. 2 Cor. v. 14, 15.

Oh, crucify this self, that I

No more, but Christ may in me live;
Bid all my vile affections die,

Nor let one hateful lust survive.
In all things nothing may I see,
Or aught desire or seek but thee.
