PREFACE.

Accordingly, in the

THE New Code requires as an exercise of reading in the First Standard, "one of the narratives next in order after monosyllables in an elementary reading book used in the school." compilation of the present Reader, the editor has confined himself almost exclusively to words of one and two syllables. The lessons in the present work are, as the Code says, "narratives," and not lessons on subjects which may improve the minds of the young but are little calculated to excite their attention. The best reading book is the book which will teach children the difficult subject of reading in the best and quickest way. This is the view of the matter which the Education Department adopts in its "Instructions to Inspectors," and it is upon this principle that the present series of reading books is compiled.
