John Heywood's New Educational Works.

JOHN HEYWOOD'S MANCHESTER READERS.

A NEW series of books of rudimentary instruction for elementary schools of all grades and classes, specially prepared to suit the requirements of the New Code, and affording the most efficient instruction in Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic, for the various standards of examination.

The Reading and spelling Lessons are on an entirely new principle, differing essentially from those in other Readers. In the Primer or Elementary Reader, simple narrative in monosyllables is the chief feature, the lessons in spelling and reading being graduated on a system based on the sounds of the vowels, commencing with the short and more simple sounds, and then passing on to the long sounds and complex combinations of diphthongs and consonants. In the First Book, adapted to Standard I., the same system of gradation is observed, leading by degrees to the more difficult monosyllables, interspersed with dissyllables. In the advanced books the attention of the learner is directed to word-building, or the construction of groups of words from single roots, with the relative meanings of the words thus constructed. The Reading Lessons will be found to be in every way interesting to the pupil, and at the same time calculated to impart much useful knowledge, and to inculcate right princ ples.

Writing Lessons are given in the Primer and First Book. In the former they are desi ned for practice on the slate with a slate pencil, the letters and figures being in white on a black ground, similar to those which the pupil produces on his slate, and which his teacher produces in chalk on the black ground, thus giving to the pupil examples which he may copy in exact fac-simile-the appearance of the copy and his writing on the slate being the same. In the First Book the models are in black letters on white ground, the pupil using this book being considered capable of copying from such.

The Lessons in Arithmetic in each book will be found specially adapted to the different standards.

An entirely novel feature is the introduction of Drawing Copies for slate-work-a most useful auxiliary to the study of writing. A pleasing change is thus introduced into the school work, a means afforded of arousing anew the attention of a class beginning to flag, and a step taken towards the introduction of a knowledge of the first principles of art into elementary schools. In the advanced standards the copies, although designed for slate practice, may, of course, be used for drawing on paper.

The MANCHESTER READERS are printed in clear type, on good strong paper, and issued in a stout binding, calculated to resist, as far as possible, the wear and tear of every-day use in elementary schools.
