NEW CODE READERS,
THE NEW EDUCATIONAL CODE.
EDUCATIONAL DEPARTMENT, 141, DEANSGATE.
J. C. TACEY, CITY ROAD,
THE New Code requires as an exercise of reading in the First Standard,
“one of the narratives next in order after monosyllables in an
elementary reading book used in the school.” Accordingly, in the
compilation of the present Reader, the editor has confined himself
almost exclusively to words of one and two syllables. The lessons in the
present work are, as the Code says, “narratives," and not lessons on
subjects which may improve the minds of the young but are little
calculated to excite their attention. The best reading book is the book
which will teach children the difficult subject of reading in the best and
quickest way. This is the view of the matter which the Education
Department adopts in its "Instructions to Inspectors," and it is upon this principle that the present series of reading books is compiled.
