PREFATORY NOTE

THE poems in this volume are those suggested for reading in the later years of the high-school course. They have been edited as simply as possible, with the desire to be of service to both pupil and teacher.

The editor wishes to acknowledge his obligation to his sister, Emily P. St. John, of the Manual Training High School of Brooklyn, for assistance in the preparation of "The Life of Browning" and the notes on his poems.
