PREFACE.

THE Third New Code Reader is varied in nature, and is made up of lessons on subjects calculated to excite the interest of children. While the matter is more difficult than that of the Reader for the Second Standard, care has been taken to exclude lessons which are written in a style of language too sententious and condensed to be easily understood. The chief battles of the early part of our history are included; and the descriptions are given sufficiently in detail to impress the event upon the mind of the reader. Pieces of Poetry are interspersed between the lessons, and great care has been taken to exclude such extracts as would be difficult of comprehension to a child in this Standard. A few lessons on common objects are included, in which such points only are touched upon as are likely to be useful and interesting to the young. The Editor has had constantly before his mind, in the compilation of this volume, the requirements of the New Code, and the "Instructions to Inspectors," and he trusts that teachers will find the Third Standard Reader useful for the purpose for which it was drawn up; viz., to furnish a book out of which children may be taught to read fluently and intelligently their native language.
