The wearied pilgrim, when the sun
Has ended his diurnal race,

With pleasure sees the friendly moon,

By borrow'd light, supply his place;
Not that he slights the God of day,
But loves e'en his reflected ray.

T

HAVE you not seen the timid tear
Steal trembling from mine eye?
Have you not mark'd the flush of fear,
Or caught the murmur'd sigh?

And can you think my love is chill,

Nor fixt on you alone?

SA

And can you rend, by doubting still,&
A heart so much your own?

To you my soul's affections move

Devoutly, warmly true;

My life has been a task of love,
One long long thought of you.
If all your tender faith is o'er,

If still my truth you'll try,
Alas! I know but one proof more—

I'll bless your name and die.

HY W will FLORELLA, while I gaze,
My ravisht eyes reprove,

And chide them from the only face
They can behold with love?

To shun your scorn, and ease my care,
I seek a nymph more kind,
And while I rove from fair to fair
Still gentle usage find.

But oh! how faint is every joy
Where nature has no part!
New beauties may my eyes employ,
But you engage my heart.

So restless exiles doom'd to roam

Meet pity every where ;

Yet languish for their native home,

Tho' death attends them there.*

This song, closed by a beautiful and happy simile, may be regarded as a perfect model of the ingenious class.
