CHAP. X.

2 Christ disputeth with the Pharisees touching divorcement: 13 blesseth the children that are brought unto him: 17 resolveth a rich man how he may inherit life everlasting: 23 telleth his disciples of the danger of riches: 28 promiseth rewards to them that forsake any thing for the Gospel: 32 foretelleth his death and resurrection: 35 biddeth the two ambitious suitors to think rather of suffering with him: 46 and restoreth to Bartimæus his sight.

A. D. 33. AND "he arose from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judæa by the farther side of Jordan: and the people resort unto him again; and, as he was wont, he taught them again.

2 And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.

3 And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?

sant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity. ROM. xii. 18: If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. do. xiv. 17, 19: The kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another. 1 COR. vii. 15: God hath called us to peace. do. xiv. 33: God is not the author of confusion, but of peace. 2 COR. xiii. 11: Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you. 1 THES. 13: Be at peace among yourselves. 2 TIM. ii. 22: Flee also youthful lusts, but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. HEB. xii. 14: Follow peace with all men. 1 PET. iii. 11: Seek peace, and ensue it.

MAT. xix. 1: When Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judæa, beyond Jordan. JOHN, x. 40: [Jesus] went away again beyond Jordan. do. xi. 7: Then saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judæa again.

5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. 6 But from the beginning of the creation2 God made them male and female.

7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to3 his wife;

8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.

9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.5

10 And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter.

11 And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall 'put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.

GEN. ii. 24: Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. 1 Cor. vi. 16: Know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. do. vii.2: To avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. EPH. v. 31: For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

MAT. v. 32: Whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whoso shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery. Repeated MAT. xix. 9, and LUKE, xvi. 18; only in St. LUKE, fornication is not mentioned. Rom. vii. 3: If while her husband liveth she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to an1 COR. vii. 10, 11: Let not the wife depart from her husband; but and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.

13 ¶ And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.

14 But when Jesus saw it, he was "much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

16 And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

17 ¶ And when he was gone forth into the way, there 'came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. 19 Thou knowest the commandments, "Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not "steal, Do

21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have "treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, 'How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

P MAT. vi. 19, 20: Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. do. xix. 21: Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven and come and follow me. 24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that 'trust 10 in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

25 It is easier for a camel11 to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

26 And they were astonished out of measure, 12 saying among themselves, Who then can be saved?

27 And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with 'God all things are possible.

28 ¶ Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have 'left all, and have followed thee.

29 And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you,13 There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the Gospel's,

'JOB, Xxxi. 24: If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence. Ps. lii. 7: Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness. Ps. Ixii. 10: Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery; if riches increase, set not your heart upon them. HAB. ii. 9: Woe to him that coveteth an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil. 1 TIM. vi. 17: Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God.
