Review of the New Musical Publications.

pal topics which Mr. DUSSECK has felected for imitation, and, in which, for the most part, he has greatly fucceeded. The ideas are frequently new and ftriking while, in many places, the combinations and modulations are matterly and learned. The road of nature is not always kept, yet the bye-paths, however intricate and perplexed, have generally the property of bringing back the vagrant author to the broad and fimple tract; and the whole certainly forms an excellent practical leffon for the inftrument for which it is profeffedly compofed. Six favourite German Waltzes, arranged for the Piano-Forte. Price 1s.

This fonata, though not in the first rank of piano-forte compofitions, certainly poffeffes many pleasing paffages; and in fome places difcovers a refpectable degree of fcience. The opening, which is an Adagio in common time, is striking, and excellently preparative to the fucceeding movement. We cannot entirely approve of modulations fo violently digreffive, as fome which we have met with; as in page 3 and 4, where wantonnefs and affection feem to ufurp the place of judgment and fober learning. The Andante is very agreeable, and its fubject happily relieved by the Minore, while the minuet which it introduces is genteel and elegant, and concludes the piece with an impreffion highly favourable to its character.

A Second Collection of Canzonets, and a Glee for Three Voices, with Accompaniments for the Piano Forte or Harp, compofed by T. Fifin. Price 7s. Ed. Jones and Holland. We find fix canzonets in this collection, most of which are conceived in a very engaging style. The fubject and caft of the words, are not every where attended to with that precition which forms the chief feature of all vocal compofitions, neither are they wholly neglected. The accent (as in the firft bar of the canzonet) is fometimes faliely laid, but the truth and force of the emphatis, in general, forms an allowable fet-off, againt

that defect, and imparts a valuable quality to the melody. The glee, which clofes the collection, is fimple and pleafing. It poffeffes no counter-point, or marks of harmonical contrivance, but is an agreeable melody harmonized.

The Cottagers;" a Glee for Three Voices, alfo a favourite Round, composed by L. Atterbury. Price 1s. 6d.

Jones and Holland. "The Cottagers" is an ingenious compofition. The parts are difpofed with judgment, and, confidering the general poverty of the choral mufic of The modern days, are closely wove. round is evidently from the fame experienced author. Its melody is eafy and flowing, and different voices are intermingled with much dexterity and art. "In vain we fill the fparkling bowl," an Anacreontic Song, fung by Mr. Burrows, at Freemafon's Hall, compofed by T. B. Schroeder. Price Is. Jones and Holland. We find much Bacchanalian fpirit in this fong. The melody, though not ftrikingly novel, is free and open, and the introductory and concluding fymphonies, both inspirit and enrich the compofition.

No. II. and III. of Apollo & Terpsichore, a Collection of the most celebrated Songs, Duetts, Rondos, &c. adapted for the PianoForte, Violin, Guittar, or German Flute, Is. 6d. each Number. Rolfe. Many of the airs, duetts, &c. collected in this publication, are highly defirable. The work is printed in a convenient portable fize, and cannot but be found exceedingly convenient to the amateurs of light, eafy, fashionable, and familiar mufic. We find in the prefent numbers, the celebrated dance in Paul et Virginie"-a jufdly favourite Swifs air-the well received trio, "Here's a health to all good laffes"-and feveral others in much estimation.

"My Love to the War is gone;" a favourite Ballad, as fung at the Nobility's Concerts; compofed by Mr. Moulds. Price Is.

Rolfe.

This is a pathetic little compofition, and does much credit to the taste of the author. The fimplicity perfectly accords with the fubject of the words; and the accompaniment, which is adapted both to the flute and violin, enriches the effect of the melody. The bafs is, for the moft part, arpezzio, but not always well choen; particularly the fecond note in the third bar of the fecond part, which fhould probably have been E. "Farewell

"Farewell the Beams of early Day;" a new Song written by Peter Pindar, fet to Mufic by J. Ambrofe. Price 1s. Riley.

The melody of this fong contains fome very attractive paffages. The modulation into the fifth of the original key, at the words" And fpees feem to haunt the shade," and the introduction of the natural feventh towards the clofe, are inftances in proof of much sweetness of fancy, and

justly recommend the compofition. Bu we are obliged to obferve, that Mr. AMBROSE, in this fong, as well as in fome other of his productions, has not been fufficiently attentive in the choice of his bafs. The last bar but one of the melody now before us, is the only example we fhall at prefent point out, of impropriety in this particular.

Since the laft medical report, there has been a confiderable alteration in the temperature of the air, and the state of the weather, which has occafioned, in fome inftances, an aggravation of fymptoms in the different fpecies of pneumonic complaints.

The number of recent cafes, however, is fmaller, than that which occurred during the time in which the former report was taken. Fevers have been more frequent than in the prefent month. The fpecies which has been moft prevalent is the Typhus, or what has by fome writers been called the Nervous Fever. This dileafe ufitally commences with flight chilliness and fhiverings, alternating with fufhings of heat unequally diffured, very different from the rigors, and the confequent violent degree of heat which occurs in other fevers. There is generally great reftleifness and anxiety; in fome cafes, a confiderable degree of pain, and in others, a vertiginous affection of the head. Throughout the difeale, there is generally a confution of ideas, and, on fome occalion, great hurry of fpirits. In fome of the cafes referred to in the lift, an infenfibility prevailed, which made it difficult to obtain any clear idea of the patient's fenfations.

In one of the cafes of Afcites, which had long continued, and at first proved very obftinate, we fucceeded, beyond our expectation, in obtaining a recovery. This we think may be attributed to the free use of elaterium. The draftic operation of this medicine, at firft, difcouraged the patient; but the large difcharge of fluid which followed, excited in his mind the hope of a reco very; fo that in a little time he folicited a more frequent repetition of it than it was prudent to allow: but upon the fteady use of it, together with bitters and chalybeates, to fupport the vis vita, the moft happy confequences enfured.

The eryfipelas infantile, mentioned in the lift of difeafes, terminated fatally. This is a difeafe to which new-born children are liable, and under the violent fymptoms of which they frequently fink. It attacks different parts of the body; the fingers and hands are the feat of it when it is firft difcovered, though in its pro grefs it extends over almost every part of the body. It is diftinguished by a number of livid difcolourations, with fome degree of tumour and hardness. In the prefent instance, there were feveral ve cations, fimilar in appearance to thofe from which an ichorous difcharge proceeds in cafes of mortification. This difeafe is generally fo rapid in its progreis, that but little affiftance can be de rived from medicine. The free use of the bark, with the external application of cataplafins, fomentations, and spirituous embrocations, are the moft probable means of relief, and in fome milder fpe cies of the difeafe, they have proved ef fectual remedies,
