JUPITER AND DANAE.

Horace was right, in speaking of the power of Gold, to say: More powerful than the thunder bolt, gold finds its way amongst sentinels; it traverses the hardest rocks. The love of gold, caused the death of the celebrated soothsayer of Argos, and the destruction of his race. It was with gold, that the macedonian hero forced the gates of cities, and supplanted kings his rivals. With gold, we even succeed in lessening the barbarity of pirates. ›

It was with gold also, that Jupiter, was enabled to deceive the vigilance of Acrisius, who had confined Danae in a tower, because the oracle had predicted, that he would perish by the hand of the child, of which his daughter would be delivered.

C'est avec raison qu'Horace, en parlant du pouvoir de l'or, a dit: « Plus puissant que la foudre, l'or se glisse facilement entre les sentinelles; il traverse les rochers les plus durs. L'amour de l'or a causé la mort du célèbre devin d'Argos, et la ruine de toute sa race. C'est avec de l'or que le héros macédonien forçait les portes des villes et supplantait les rois ses rivaux. Avec de l'or on parvient même à adoucir la barbarie des pirates. »

C'est avec de l'or aussi que Jupiter parvint à tromper la vigilance d'Acrise, qui avait enfermé Danaé dans une tour, parce que l'oracle lui avait prédit qu'il périrait par la main d'un enfant auquel sa fille donnerait naissance.

Ce carton de Jules Romain faisait partie de la galerie du Palais-Royal, il fut alors gravé par Jean-Baptiste Poilly Largeur, 8 pieds 8 pouces; hauteur, 7 pieds 6 pouces.
