The Death of Jesus.

26

• Shepherd greth His life for the sheep."

HERE is a green hill far away
Without a city wall,

Where the dear Lord was crucified,
Who died to save us all.

We may not know, we cannot tell,
What pains He had to bear;

But we believe it was for us
He hung and suffered there.

He died that we might be forgiven ;
He died to make us good;
That we might go at last to heaven,
Saved by His precious blood.

There was none other good enough
To pay the price of sin ;
the only would unlock the gate

of huren, and let us in.

O early, dearly has He loved,

And we must love Him too,

And trust in His redeo

And try His work

"These things were written of Him."

HAT a strange and wondrous story
From the Book of God is read:

How the Lord of life and glory

Had not where to lay His head;
How He left His throne in heaven,
Here to suffer, bleed, and die,
That my soul might be forgiven,
And ascend to God on high!

Father, let Thy Holy Spirit
Still reveal a Saviour's love,
And prepare me to inherit

Glory, where He reigns above.
There with saints and angels dwelling,
May I that great love proclaim,
And with them be ever telling

All the wonders of His Name.

"There they crucified Him."

EYOND the wicked city wall

They set the cruel cross on high, Where the dear Lord, who saved us all,

Did hang in pain, and bleed, and die.

The hands that touched the blind to sight,
That gave the sick man strength anew,
That raised the dead to life and light,

Were pierced and wounded through and through.

The feet that walked the stormy sea,
That ever turned at sorrow's prayer,
By sharp nails fastened to the tree,

Hung torn and hurt and bleeding there.

Since God's own Son must suffer thus,
Our souls from Satan's grasp to win ;
Since only He could ransom us,

O what a fearful thing is sin!

O by Thy griefs that dreadful day,
Dear Lord, and by Thy precious blood,
Wash all our guilty stains away,

And make Thy sinful children good.

29

"Thou hast redeemed us by Thy blood."

ROUND the throne of God in Heaven

Thousands of children stand:

Children, whose sins are all forgiven,

A holy, happy band;

Singing, glory, glory, glory!

P.M.

What brought them to that world above,
That Heaven so bright and fair,

Where all is peace and joy and love,-
How came those children there?
Singing, &c.

Because the Saviour shed His blood

To wash away their sin;

Bathed in that pure and precious flood,
Behold them white and clean;
Singing, &c.

On earth they sought their Saviour's grace,
On earth they loved His Name;
So now they see His blessed Face,
And stand before the Lamb;
Singing, &c.

Easter.

30

"Now is Christ risen from the dead."

ESUS Christ is risen to-day,

Our triumphant holy-day,

Who did once upon the cross,
Suffer to redeem our loss;

7's.

Hallelujah!

Hallelujah!

Hallelujah !

Hallelujah!

[blocks in formation]

"The Lord is risen indeed."

UR Saviour Christ is risen indeed,
And never more can die;

And Satan's captives have been freed

From sin and misery;

Our chains are burst, and we released,
And we have cause to keep the feast.

The rulers tried to guard His grave;
They rolled a mighty stone,
And put a watch beside the cave,
And set a seal thereon;

They feared that He whom they had slain,

Would on the third day rise again.
