LIFE

DR. FLEETWOOD'S

OF

CHRIST,

With Lives of the Apostles and Evangelists.

THE Life of Christ! These simple words at once convey to the mind an idea grateful and soothing to the heart. They wake in every Christian mind recollections of bounty, of proffered mercy of all that was gentle and yielding in compassion, of all that was dignified and unbending in suffering.

The Life of Christ, as brought before us in the four Gospels, is one of those precious treasures which have been providentially handed down through many centuries; and, happily, it remains entire and unimpaired. The most stupendous works of human cunning fall to decay, or lose their importance; the proud architecture of Greece is seen in ruins; the awful pyramids of Egypt are merely inexplicable curiosities; but the Life of Christ, embodying incidents of affect ing interest and lessons of divine wisdom, presents to the eye no failure. There, in all their freshness, we see examples of goodness, patience, and enduring love: we behold the tree of life flourishing in eternal verdure. The shining narrative attracts from afar, not so much by its splendor as by its healing virtue. We look on that, and it instructs us how to live, and moreprepares us to die. To the sad heart and broken spirit it is another pool of Bethesda; but superior to the original. for it was only at certain periods that could afford relief to those who plunged in its cooling waters, while this is always accessible-never loses its virtue and importance.

Modern research and modern travel have turned up a wide field to the historian and to the pictorial illustrator. The newly-acquired power of deciphering ancient hieroglyphic, cuneiform, and other inscriptions, has opened to them a mine of wealth in the understanding of the won drous and truthful relics of antiquity so profusely spread over the lands of Holy Writ. We are no longer left in doubt as to circumstances and peculiarities which till now have been mere matters of speculation or altogether unthought of.

In bringing before the public of the New World a standard work like the present, it became the duty of the Publishers to take into consideration all the requirements of the present age, and this they have not failed to do.

Hitherto the illustrations to such works as the present have been selections from very inferior paintings, having no likeness whatever to each other, which will be seen by reference to all other illustrated editions of the Life of Christ. It has been the ambition of the Publishers to embellish the present edition of the "Life of Christ" in a style worthy of its all-important subject; and to submit to the enlightened American public such a book as has not yet been produced in this or any other country.
