MY DEAR LYTTLETON,

As you are about entering the medical profession, I dedicate with great pleasure the fourth edition of this work to you, with an earnest desire that you may diligently uphold the honour and dignity of the learned body to which you are on the eve of allying yourself, endeavouring on all occasions to advance the science of medicine, and by assiduous application to the study of the pathology and treatment of disease, be instrumental in prolonging human life, and diminishing bodily and mental suffering.
