A Prayer for the Evening.

Lord, my most gracious Keeper, and my fure Defence! I do moft fincerely praise Thee for the daily Succours of thy good Providence, and for all the Incomes of thy divine Grace in my Soul: It is of thy Goodness that I have been preserved in Safety from the many Dangers which have befet me round; yea, that I have escaped the Torments of Hell, which my many Sins have moft juftly deferved, and which I have greatly provoked Thee to inflict upon me in thy Wrath. O Lord, pardon my Sins which are great and many, for the fake of our Lord Jefus Chrift, who made himself a Sacrifice for Sinners. And be pleased to beget in me fuch lafting Indignation and Hatred to all manner of Sin, that I may be kept fafe from being overcome by any Temptations to it all my Life long; and may grow in Grace, and in all Chriftian Virtues; and

and may be carried on by thy mighty Power, through Faith unto Salvation. - O Lord, vouchfafe to preferve our General, with all the Officers and all the Soldiers in this our Army, and make us faithful to our Prince, and valiant for the Interests of our Country: I befeech Thee pardon our great Sins, reform our corrupt Manners, and be pleased to keep us from all Evil, Spiritual and Temporal; and make us to reft in Safety under the Covert of thy Wings this Night and for ever, through Jefus Chrift our Lord, who has commanded us when we pray, to fay,

A Prayer for one that is Sick or Wounded.

Bleffed Father of our Lord Jefus Chrift, who art by Him reconciling this finful World to thy felf; Grant me the fweet Experience of thy Love

and Mercy in Him, I most earnestly befeech Thee. I lie here in Sorrow and Distress, under the Affliction of a pained Body, and an afflicted Mind. O Lord, do thou help and fuccour, for, without Thee, vain is the Help of Man: Bind up all my Sores, and heal all my Diseases. I must confefs thou art righteous in all that has come upon me. I have deferved this, and infinitely greater Mifery. But, O Lord, deal not with me after my Sins, but according to thine infinite Mercies. Be pleafed to restore my Health, and renew my Strength and fo fanctify this prefent Affliction, that I may ferve Thee better all the Days of my Life. In the mean Time, O my God, be pleafed to arm me with Patience, and to ftrengthen my Faith and Refolution of living a more Holy Life. But if thou haft determined that this present Affliction fhall be the Meffenger of Death, O Lord, prepare me for that, Hour: Blot out all my Sins through the Blood of Jefus Chrift, and fanctify me in Soul and Body by thy good Spirit; that I may live to

EJACULATIONS fuited to the various Occafions of a Military Life, and which should be learned by Heart.

O LORD, vouchfafe to gird me with Strength, and to honour me with thy

Salvation.

O Lord, be not far from me: for I flee to Thee to help me.

Thou, O Lord, art my Goodness, and my Fortress, my bigh Tower, and my Deliverer, my Shield, and He in whom I ‡rust. Pfal. cxliv. 2.

God is our Refuge and Strength,a very prefent Help in Trouble: Therefore will we not fear, though the Earth be moved, and though the Mountains be carried into the midst of the Sea. Pfal. xlvi. 1.

The Lord is my Light and my Salvation, Whom Shall I fear? The Lord is the Strength of my Life: Of whom shall I be afraid? Pfal xxvii. 1.

Remember

Remember, O Lord, thy tender Mercies, and thy loving Kindness, for they have been ever of old. Pfal. xxi. 6.

Remember not the Sins of my Youth, nor my Tranfgreffions; but according to thy Mercy remember Thou me for thy Goodness fake, O Lord. Pfal. xxv. 7.

O Lord of Hofts, vouchsafe to put thofe to Confufion that hate us; and fight Thou against thofe that fight against us.

A Horfe is a vain Thing for Safety; neither is any Man faved by his great Strength. In vain is an Arm of Flesh: O Lord, be Thou our Defence.

Bleffed be the Lord my Strength, who teacheth my Hands to war, and my Fingers to fight. Pfal. cxliv. 1.

HE Providence of God has engaged me in a Calling, which the Defence of my Country has made neceffary, and which I may (by difcharging it with Courage and Fidelity, as I ought to do) make honourable. But however, it is a Calling, wherein as I must expect to meet with Dangers that. may take
