Religion thus commended-the Spring-time of life thus improved the plants of grace will be prepared for Summer luxuriance and Autumn fruitfulness. The heat will not injure them when the roots have struck deeply and spread widely. Our children, if spared to advancing years, will be enabled to endure the fierce heats of temptation and the sultry blasts of passion. They will bring forth fruit in their season, adorning the doctrine of God their Saviour; and when Death comes with his scythe, as come he will, it will only be to cut down the shock of corn, which angels will gather and convey to the Heavenly Garner.

HAVE prepared this little book for the Young. I

hope it will prove true to its title,-"A Help to Early Prayer and Praise." May God give a blessing to every one who may use it.

I want in this Chapter to say a few words to my youthful readers, more especially about Prayer. Try and give me all the attention you can.

Perhaps the simplest and best answer to the question, "What is Prayer?" was once given in a Sunday-school: "It is asking God for what we want."

Prayer, you see, is not saying prayers. It is "asking" (Matt. vii. 7): it is "calling upon God" (Ps. 1. 15),—asking and calling upon Him for "what we want."
