I own, indeed, tbe Explanation of the Words are short, and, in many refpeéts, a little deficient; but if they are enough to convey to the Learner so much Signification, as to give him an Idea or juf Notion of the common Meaning of the Word, that is fufficient; for thisis so kecelary a Branch of Education, that bare Spelling without it, must be allowed to be of itself dry, useless, and insignificant. e?i ? in *14. In fine, if upon the Whole it appears to be as useful for Children, more serviceable to adult Perfons, than Spelling-Books in general, that is enough to make every candid Reader wink at a few Imperfections's And as for whimsical and cenforious Critics, for fucb there ever will be, whose whole Search and Labour is to carp and find fault upon the leaf occasion, and very often without any Reafon at all, I fcall not troue ble myself about, but leave to them for their Trouble the pleasure of mbeir own Thoughts, and subscribe myself,
