TO

HIS GRACE AUGUSTUS-FREDERICK, DUKE OF LEINSTER,

AND

THE RIGHT HON. AND MOST REV. RICHARD WHATELY, D.D.

LORD ARCHBISHOP OF DUBLIN,

THE ONLY SURVIVING MEMBERS

OF THE

ORIGINAL NATIONAL EDUCATION BOARD,

THIS LITTLE VOLUME

IS RESPECTFULLY AND GRATEFULLY DEDICATED BY

THE AUTHOR.

PREFACE.

HAVING been employed, for upwards of thirtyone years, in the great work of National Education in Ireland, I have thought it incumbent upon me to leave some record behind me of the results of my experience, both as an Inspector of Schools in different parts of the country, and also as one of the Professors and Superintendents of the Model and Training Schools in Dublin. With this view, I have selected from my Writings at different periods, the following Papers, which will be found to embrace almost every subject connected with Popular Education and School-keeping.

It is perhaps necessary to state that the Commissioners of National Education are not responsible for the publication of this volume, nor for any of the views or opinions expressed in it.

R. S.

Dublin, 20th June, 1863.
