It is difficult to know how many Jews there are in the places of which I have already given a list. The numbers may be about the following: The Electorate of Hesse Cassel 25,000. The Dukedom of Nassau 10,000. The Grand Duchy of Hesse Darmstadt 28,000. The Landgravedom of Hesse Homburg 10,000. In Frankfurt itself 14,000. The Rhenish Prussian Provinces 50,000. Rhenish Bavaria 22,000. Baden, 20,000. Würtemberg 15,000. Bavaria 70,000, and Alsace 43,000.

It may be well for me to leave a full account of the Frankfurt mission for the next number of "the Advocate." I shall now merely say, that the Jews in Alsace are chiefly rabbinists. They gain their living by all kinds of trading and barter. Many of the rich Jews, and of the young people, care nothing about religion. The teachers in their schools are very ignorant, so that it is no wonder if the schools are in a low state. These Alsacian Jews are very different to most of those who live in France. They are chiefly inferior and not so well educated.

In 1848, when there was a revolution, thousands of the poor Jews were robbed and turned out of their houses. This took place in many of the districts of which I have spoken. Your sincere friend,

THE EDITOR.

THE JEWS' SOCIETY.

Psalm lxxx. 1; Isaiah lx. 21, 22.

On this labour of love, may a blessing attend;
May the Shepherd of Israel His Salem befriend;
And hasten that period, by prophets foretold,
When the stragglers of Judah shall rest in His fold.
Isaiah xlix. 8, 9.

For surely the time is approaching when He
Shall set, in His love, the law's prisoners free;
And send them to feed in the ways of His grace,
And find them a pasture in every high place.
Isaiah xlix. 6, 12.

Behold! they shall come from afar at His word,
Which alike in the North and the West shall be heard:
His uplifted standard shall Sinim's land see,
And a light to the Gentiles His people shall be.
Isaiah lii. 1, 2.

Awaken, O Zion, and put on thy strength,

And array thee in beautiful garments at length; Shake thyself from the dust with the might of the strong,

And cast off the bands which have bound thee so long.

Isaiah 1x. 10.

The son of the strangers thy walls shall rebuild,
Thy gates shall be open, thy courts shall be filled;
God once smote thee in anger, but now, thou shalt see
That He in His favour hath mercy on thee.

Isaiah lx. 1-3.

The Lord in His glory upon thee shall rise;
The Gentiles shall come to thy light with surprise;
And their kings shall rejoice thy bright rising to greet,
When God shall make glorious the place of His feet.
Hebrews xii. 25.

If the judgments of God on your fathers went forth,
Who were deaf unto Him who spake only on earth,
Oh! refuse not the boon which would surely be given,
Nor turn ye from Him who now speaketh from heaven.

THE CHILDREN'S JUBILEE MEMORIAL. THE number of collecting books which are now in use are about eight hundred. Besides these, one of our Association Secretaries, the Rev. R. W. Wolseley, has taken two hundred and fifty for Juvenile Associations, and hopes in this way to get out eight hundred in the course of the year. Some others of our friends may make a similar trial.

We give a nice little note received from one of our young collectors.

"Dear Sir,-I should like very much to become a little collector for the Children's Jubilee Memorial. I will engage to collect five shillings, but if I can get more, you shall have it. I hope the Jewish children in Constantinople will have a nice school, and nice teachers to teach them the way to heaven.

"I hope you will send me a little book as quickly as you can.

Believe me, your little collector,
