PREFACE.

PRAYER is the key which unlocks the treasures of the Almighty; and procures for us gifts more precious than all the riches of the world. But we must look upon prayer, not so much a privilege, as a duty; and the most important one that we have to perform-—for it is from God that we receive the blessing of health, and all the comforts and conveniences of life.

It behoves us then never to omit praising Him; more particularly at the beginning and close of the day. But we should accustom ourselves to withdraw sometimes from our worldly pursuits, to the retirement of our closets, and hold communion with our Heavenly Father-and, also, ever to remember, that He is not only a God of Mercy, but likewise of Justice; who, although he promises eternal life to those that serve Him faithfully; has, nevertheless, said the wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the people that forget God.

How necessary it is, then, for each one of us, to ask himself the question-Is my soul so engaged with the things of this life, as to leave me no time to think of God and eternity?

Reader, is it so with you? If it is, remember that you may be summoned, this day, to meet your Judge-" who will give to every man according to his deeds, whether they be good, or whether they be evil."

And, if you have not walked with God, when on earth; you cannot expect to live with Him in heaven; but your portion will be with the unbelievers, where there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Let us pray.

ALMIGHTY, and most merciful God, we meet together this morning to offer unto Thee our praises and thanksgivings, for having preserved us through the past night; and, also, for having blest us with another Sabbath.

Teach us, we beseech Thee, to value this inestimable blessing, and enable us to make a proper use of it, by assembling ourselves in Thy "House of Prayer," and attending Thine ordinances.

And, when we are there, make us to feel that Thine eye is upon us, and that Thou canst read the inmost thoughts of our hearts.

Let us join in the services with becoming reverence, and keep us from thinking of worldly things.

Never suffer us to grow weary in Thy service; but may we consider it our highest privilege to worship Thee.
