ARCHBISHOP'S HOUSE, WESTMINSTER, S.W.

MY DEAR CANON WENHAM,

Oct. 5, 1877.

After the careful revisions which your Scripture Reading Book has undergone,-three of them being made for the purpose of satisfying criticisms,-I can have no hesitation in saying that you have fulfilled the obligations of prudence in selecting the passages of Holy Scripture for the use of our schools.

The principle on which you proceeded seems to me to be sound, namely, to preserve the text of the Holy Scripture in its integrity, and to be governed in your selections, and in the omissions of words or phrases, by the needs and conditions of those for whom the book is intended. The very careful Censors, who have revised it, or revised the revisions, enable me to commend the book with confidence for use in our schools.

Believe me, always yours affectionately in Christ,

HENRY EDWARD,

Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster.

The Very Rev. CANON WENHAM,
