NAVAL ACADEMY,

Annapolis, Md., March, 1886.

PREFACE.

The object of this book is to present, in as clear and concise a manner as possible, such military principles and such information as may prove of practical benefit to officers operating ashore with an armed force.

While fully realizing that there are many officers in the service of greater experience, and far more competent to prepare a work of this kind than myself, yet, as no such work has hitherto been prepared, I trust that this one may meet with the approval of, and be of practical benefit to, the service at large.

It is for the most part a compilation from various official and standard authorities, and little claim is made to originality; in fact, much originality in a book of this character would be out of place, and detract from its value as a work of reference.

The excellent article contained in the Ordnance Instructions, U. S. Navy, on landing parties, has been largely used, but a different arrangement given to it and considerable new matter added. The Army Regulations and other official sources have also been freely consulted.

Permission was asked of, and courteously granted by, the following authors and publishers to make extracts from certain of their writings or publications, viz: General Lord Wolseley, R. A.; Captain Bedford, R. N.; General Wingate; Colonel Craighill, U. S. Army; Colonel Laidley, U. S. Army; Captain Collum, U. S. Marine Corps; Captain Blunt, U. S. Army; Lieutenant Farrow, U. S. Army; Lieutenant Regan, U. S. Army; Appleton & Co.; Scribner Bros.
