BEWARE OF OINTMENTS FOR CATARRH THAT CONTAIN MERCURY,

as mercury will surely destroy the sense of smell and completely derange the whole system when entering it through the mucous surfaces. Such articles should never be used except on prescriptions from reputable physicians, as the damage they will do is ten fold to the good you can possibly derive from them. Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufacturered by F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo, O., contains no mercury, and is taken internally, acting directly upon the blood and mucous surfaces of the system. In buying Hall's Catarrh Cure be sure you get the genuine. It is taken internally, and made in Toledo, Ohio, by F. J. Cheney & Co. Testimonials free.

Sold by Druggists, price 75c. per bottle.

ATTENTION, LADIES!

If you have a bill to be filled in the dry goods line, there is no place where it can be done to better advantage than at the New York Store, on North Summer street. Their large stock covers every branch of the dry goods business, and there is nothing that they do not keep and always the best at that. The thousand who are trading there, say that they do so because they can get supplied at about two-thirds the price of other houses.

HISTORIC ST. MARY'S.

It may be of interest to the readers of the VETERAN to know that St. Mary's School, whose advertisement appears in this number, was a place of refuge during the late war for the wife and children of President Davis, and that the daughter of Gen. Lee was educated there. In fact, many were the daughters of the South who were entrusted to the care and protection of Dr. Aldert Smedes, the beloved founder and rector of the school It is interesting to know also that for six weeks the Federal soldiers were encamped in St. Mary's grove and that throughout this time the order of the school was not interrupted. So rare indeed was Dr. Smedes' tact that no unpleasatness of any kind occurred, even though it was well known that four of his sons had served in the Confederate Army. Two of these fell upon the battle-field; and one, a chaplain, the present Rector of the school, was for sometime imprisoned in the old capitol. It will give pleasure to many who see this notice who have perchance had mothers, sisters or wives educated at this institution, to learn that under the present guidance the school in point of scholarship has fully kept pace with the demands of the times, its pupils being now allowed to enter Vassar on certificate, and in point of training its girls to be refined and noble women, it has in all respects fulfilled the hopes and ideals of its founder.

JENNINGS' BUSINESS COLLEGE.

The VETERAN cannot add anything to the already strong indorsements this standard school has. It fits men for business. It is thorough. We know this, because our head book-keeper, Mr. G. C. Aycock, for the Southwestern Publishing House, came to us five years ago from Jennings'. That he has held his position and given entire satisfaction, is proof of the high standard of this school. This is an old school of established reputation.

ADVERTISE IN THE VETERAN.

Maj. J. B. Briggs, of Russellville, Ky., in a private letter: "In looking over the VETERAN, while on a sick bed, I did not find the advertisement of Bethel College, of this place. be seen by more representative men there than in a dozen magazines north, or weekly papers South-that the VETERAN went to a class of people who believed in sending their sons to a Southern College. While I have been twenty-five years a trustee of this college and the oldest member living, I was not on the advertising committee, or I would have an advertisement in the VETERAN. After my talk with the committee, they without a dissenting voice, directed the President, Dr. W. S. Ryland, to put an advertisement in the VETERAN, which he will do. He was a gallant soldier under Gen. R. E. Lee up to the surrender. He is a Virginian and is chaplain of our Camp."
