Miscellaneous Correspondence,

in Profe and Verfe:

For JANUARY, 1759.

S there is lately arrived from America, a Mohawk Indian Warrior, one of General Johnson's Guards, who had diftinguished himself at the Battle of Lake George, (where General Jobnfan beat the French) by his fingαlar Valour in taking the French General, Monfieur Deffeau, Prifoner; and as the abovenamed Indian Warrior (for the Gratification of the Curious) is expos'd to public View, drefs'd in the fame Manner with his native Indians, when they go to War, with his, Face, and Body painted, his Scalping-knife, and Tomax, or Battle-axe, and all the other Implements that are ufed by the Indians in Battle, we imagine a Copper-plate Print of this extraordinary Perfon will be agreeable: To which we add the following Account. Thefe Mobaguk Indians are fomewhat remarkable in their Perions; they much esteem a very broad, flat Foreheads which they take care to give their Children, by binding hard on that Part a Plate of Lead as foon as

they are born, and letting it lye on as long as is neceffary for that Purpose. Their Noftrils are large and open their Eyes fmall, but quick and piercing, their Ears large, &c.

The Indian Warriors have only a proper Covering round their Waist; the Reft of the Body being naked. Their Faces ate ufually painted; fome half Black, others one third, Triangular-wife; others with bearded Arrows inftead of Whiskers. Their Drefs and Appearance vary according to their Rank, as well as the Temper and Difpofition of their Minds, as they have been more or lefa civiliz'd. Their Cruelty of fcalping their Enemies is probably owing to long Cuftom amongst them, and the bafe Infinuations of thofe who may have an Influence over them; but where they have had the Advantage of different Inftruction, there are many Instances of their difcovering a different Difpotion.
