Life is a flow'r, whose brighteft hue
Appears beneath the morning dew;
In gaudy pride its buds arife,

But foon the fading bloffom dies,
And all regrets are vain.

A SON G.

From METASTASIO.

Tranflated by a Lady.

IF you do not my paffion approve,

Behold the bright eyes of my fair,

Oh hear her fweet voice, and declare,
If, in me, 'tis a weakness to love!

When you see from how lovely a spring
I derive the sweet caufe of my pains;
Oh tell me, what God, or what King
Would not glory, like me, in her chains!

VENUS

PASSING OVER THE SEA.

By TASSON I.

FORTH to the world now rose the God of day,

In boundless fplendor o'er the wat❜ry way;

Far o'er the waves th' afcending brightness threw
Of gold and purple mix'd, a trembling hue.
Heav'n's felf, well-pleas'd, in sapphire robe array'd,
Its own bright image in th' expanfe furvey'd:
Fierce Eastern winds and Afric storms in fleep
Lay pillow'd on the bofom of the deep;
Zephyr alone of all the founding train

In Sweetly murmuring whifpers curl'd the main.

Al trapaffar della Beltà divina

La fortuna del mar paffa, e s' afconde ;

L'ondeggiar della placida marina

Bacciando và l' inargentate fponde:

Ardon d'amore i pesci, e la vicina

Spiaggia languifce, invidiando all' onde;

E ftanno gli amoretti ignudi intenti

Alla vela, al governo, a i remi, ai venti.
