PREFACE.

CATHEDRAL MUSIC consists of Chaunts, Services, and Anthems, full and verse; full, when sung in four parts, called Treble, Contra-tenor, Tenor, and Bass, to the Loud or Full Organ, or in five, six, and eight parts; verse, when sung by one, two, or three voices, to the Soft or Choir Organ.

The Chaunt, though a monotony, is capable of all the graces of accent, emphasis, and pause; it is also more audible, and more striking, and, upon the whole, produces a greater effect than can the best cadences of speaking.

No nation can boast of more and better sacred music than our own; so, under proper encouragement and study, no nation might boast of better voices and more excellent per

formers, to the increase of their own delight and devotion, as well as that of others who hear them, and to the honour of those who appoint them.

Thus every Cathedral might become a glorious church, wherein all the members rejoice, animated with one Spirit,-the Spirit of God, of love, and sacred harmony.

"My song shall be of mercy and judgment: unto thee, O Lord, will I sing."-Psalm ci. 1.

"O sing praises, sing praises unto our God: O sing praises, sing praises unto our King."

"Sing ye praises with understanding.”—Psalm xlvii. 6, 7.

"I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also."-1 Cor. xiv. 15.

"I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia: Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power unto the Lord our God." "And again they said, Alleluia."-Rev. xix. 1, 3.
