With this idea in view, the author of the following papers has attempted to narrate some of the more striking events of History, through the medium of the lives of the great men of each Epoch. The subjects have been chosen from various periods and countries, and from different ranks and pursuits. They exhibit forcibly, it is hoped, the
persistent purpose in the world, and prove that there is ample scope in human life for the display of individual effort and energy.
