92

We come, obedient to thy word,
To feast on heavenly food;
Our meat, the body of the Lord,
Our drink, his precious blood.

Thus may we all thy words obey,
For we, O God, are thine;
And go rejoicing on our way,
Renew'd with strength divine.

[ocr errors]

THOU God all glory, honour, power,
Art worthy to receive;

Since all things by thy hand were made,
And by thy bounty live.

And worthy is the Lamb all praise,
Honour, and power to gain,

Glory and strength, who for our sins
A sacrifice was slain.

All worthy Thou who hast redeemed
And brought us nigh to God,
From every nation, every clime,
By thy most precious blood.

Blessing and honour, glory, power,
By all in earth and heaven,
To Him that sits upon the throne,
And to the Lamb be given.

LOOK down, O Lord, and on our youth
Bestow thy gifts of heavenly grace ;
And let the seed of sacred truth
Find in each mind a fruitful place.

Soon to appear before thy sight,
Their vow and promise to renew,
Prepare them for the solemn rite;
Bid each his heart and life review.

The cross that mark'd their infant brow,
May it a faithful emblem prove,
That they shall keep that sacred vow,
And walk as children of thy love.

Lord, teach them to remember Thee,
Their great Creator, from their youth;
Advancing to maturity,

In years, in knowledge, grace, and truth,

L. M.

Thy sons and daughters may they be,
Confirm'd and strengthen'd by thy grace;
And, safe through life preserv'd by Thee,
In heaven behold Thee face to face.

COME, Holy Ghost, eternal God,
Proceeding from above,

Both from the Father and the Son,
The God of peace and love;

Visit our minds, into our hearts
Thy heavenly grace inspire;
That truth and godliness we may
Pursue with full desire.

O Holy Ghost, into our minds
Send down thy heavenly light;
Kindle our hearts with fervent zeal,
To serve God day and night!

Our weakness strengthen and confirm,
For, Lord, Thou know'st us frail;
That neither devil, world, nor flesh,
Against us may prevail.

COME, let us use the grace divine,
And all, with one accord,

In a perpetual covenant join
Ourselves to Christ the Lord.

Give ourselves up, through Jesus' power,
His Name to glorify;

And promise in this sacred hour,

For God to live and die.

Thee, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
Let all our hearts receive;
That we, with all thy heavenly host,
To thy sole praise may live.

To each th' atoning blood apply,
Which takes our sins away;

And write thy servants' names on high,
And own us in that day,

LORD, pour thy Spirit from on high,
And thine ordained servants bless;
Graces and gifts to each supply,

L. M.

And clothe thy priests with righteousness.
Within thy temple when they stand
To teach the truth as taught by Thee,
Saviour, like stars in thy right hand
Let all thy Church's pastors be.

Wisdom and zeal and love impart,
Firmness and meekness, from above,
To bear thy people on their heart,

And love the souls which Thou dost love.

To watch and pray, and never faint,
By day and night their guard to keep,
To warn the sinner, cheer the saint,
To feed thy lambs, and tend thy sheep.
So, when their work is finish'd here,
They may in hope their charge resign:
So, when their Master shall appear,
They may with crowns of glory shine.

FATHER of mercies, bow thine ear,
Attentive to our earnest prayer;

We pray for those who plead for Thee,
Successful servants may they be.

L. M.

How great their work! how vast their charge!
Do Thou their anxious souls enlarge;

Clothe them with energy divine,

And let the words they speak be thine.

98

To them thy sacred truth reveal,
Dispel their fears, inflame their zeal ;
Teach them to sow the heavenly seed,
Teach them thy chosen flock to feed.
Let list'ning multitudes around
Hear from their lips the Gospel sound,
In humble strains thy grace implore,
And feel thy Spirit's living power.

Festivals.

HOW bright those glorious spirits shine!
Whence all their white array ?

How came they to the blissful seats
Of everlasting day?

Lo! these from tribulation great
Have come to realms of light,
And in the blood of Christ have washed
Those robes which shine so bright.
Now, with triumphal palms, they stand
Before the throne on high,

And serve the God they love, amidst
The glories of the sky.

Hunger and thirst are felt no more,
Nor sun with scorching ray;

God is their Sun, whose cheering beams

Diffuse eternal day.

The Lamb which dwells amidst the throne

Shall o'er them still preside;

Feed them with nourishment divine,

And all their footsteps guide.
