and whosoever will lose his life for my fako, shall find it.

If we suffer, we shall also reign with him ; 2 Tim. if we deny him, he also will deny us. If

any man come to me, and hate not his Luke father and mother, and wife and children, and brethren and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

And he said to them all, If any man will Ch. 9. come after me, let him deny himself, and 23, 24. také up his cross daily and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever will lose his life for my fake, the fame {hall fave it.

And when he had called the people unto Mark 8. him, with his disciples alfo, he said unto 34, 35, them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me. For whosoever will save his life, shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my fake and the gospels, the same shall save it.

Q. There is nothing more certain, according to these scriptures, than that Christians muft fuffer persecution in this world, even in tbeir persons and estates ; but hall they not also suffer in their good names, in being accounted blafphemers, hereticks, and deceivers ?

A. The disciple is not above his master, Mat. 10. nor the servant above his Lord. It is 24, 25. enough for the disciple, that he be as his

Master, and the servant, as his Lord. If they have called the Master of the house Beelzebub; how much more shall they call them of his household ?

Blessed are ye when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall fay all manner of evil against you fally, for my sake.

Then they suborned men which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God. And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council.

And when they found them not, they drew Jason, and certain brethren, unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down, are come hither also.

But this I confess unto thee, that after the way

which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers; believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets.

Being defamed, we intreat; we are made as the filth of the earth, and are the off-scouring of all things unto this day.

By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report, as deceivers, and yet true.

the sheep, and never the wolves ; the persecuted, and never the perfecutors; the afflicted, and not the afflicters; the reproached, and not reproachers : Is it not fit then that Christians be so far from persecuting others, that they ought to pray for their persecutors? Is this Christ's command ?

A. But I say unto you, Love your ene- Mat. mies; bless them that curse you, do good S. 44. to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you.

A. For even hereunto were ye called, 1 Pet. because Christ also suffered for us, leaving 22, 23. us an example, that ye should follow his steps, who did no fin, neither was guile found in his mouth; who, when he was reviled, reviled not again ; when he suffered, he threatened not, but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously.

Q. Is there an instance of any saints in scrip tures who followed bis example her ein ?

A. And he (Stephen) kneeled down, and Ads cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge, &c.

and trembling, humility, patience, and self denial : What ought we" then to think of fuch who place much of their religion in abstaining from marriage, and certain meats ; worshipping of angels, and other such acts of voluntary humility?

A. Now the spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times fome shall depart from the faith; giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; speaking lies in hypocrify; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from ñeats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving, of them which

Quest. WHAT is the duty of a magistrate?

Q. What do the scriptures speak of the duty of such as are under authority?

A. Let every soul be subject unto the Rom. higher powers; for there is no power but of 13:1; God: the powers that be, are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore 'resistéth the power, refifteth the ordinance of God; and they that resist, shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? Do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same; for he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain; for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience-fake.

Submit yourselves to every ordinance of 1 Pet. man for the Lord's fake; whether it be to the king, as supreme, or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him, for the punishment of evil-doers, and for the praise of them that do well. For fo is the will of God, that with well-doing ye may put to filence the ignorance of foolish men.
