All kneeling.

Intercession.

V. We commend unto Thy care and protection, O LORD, those for whom we pray (especially ——.) R. Vouchsafe that they and we may meet in Thy heavenly kingdom.

V. Into Thy hands we commend our spirits, souls, and bodies, which have been created, redeemed, regenerated by Thee.

R. Amen. Save, LORD, and hear us.

Holy FATHER, Who madest us and all the world, despise not the work of Thine hands, nor Thine own image defaced by sin, but renewed in righteousness and true holiness.

R. Amen. Save, LORD, and hear us.

SON of GOD, redeemer of us and all mankind, suffer not the souls to be lost which Thou hast delivered from the hand of the enemy, for Thy Name's sake which is called upon us: be merciful unto us and save us.

R. Amen. Save us, good LORD.

O HOLY GHOST, the Sanctifier, Who hast regenerated Thine elect, renew our hearts continually by Thy heavenly grace, and make them to become Thy temples, an habitation of GOD, through the Spirit.

R. Amen. Save, LORD, and hear us, O King of heaven, when we call upon Thee.

hand of hell?

R. O remember how short my time is: wherefore hast Thou made all men for nought?

V. I am a stranger with Thee: and a sojourner as all my fathers were.

R. O spare me a little that I may recover my strength before I go hence and am no more seen.

V. Tarry with us, for the day is far spent, and we know not how soon the night will come. Thy strength be made perfect in weakness. Thou who hast bound the strong man, and by death destroyed death, be with us at our last dreadful hour, and suffer us not for any pains of death to fall from Thee.

Grant, we beseech Thee, O LORD, that the end of our life may be holy, peaceful, acceptable to Thee, and if it please Thee free from pain. Guide us in peace, O LORD, our LORD; gathering us together under the feet of Thine elect, when Thou wilt, and as Thou wilt, only without sin and shame.

R. Amen, LORD JESUS, Amen.

V. We sleep, O LORD, but our soul waketh unto Thee whom our soul loveth :

[blocks in formation]

JESU CHRIST, joyful light of the holy glory of the FATHER, immortal, heavenly, holy, blessed, having come to the setting sun, and seen the evening light, we praise the FATHER, the SON, and the HOLY SPIRIT of GOD. Thou art worthy at all times to be hymned with holy voices, SoN of GOD, Giver of Life, therefore the world glorifies Thee. Amen.

Incline mercifully Thine ears, O LORD, to the words of our prayer, and fill our hearts with the grace of Thy HOLY SPIRIT, that we loving Thee with an eternal love may be accepted in these our supplications and praises, through JESUS CHRIST our LORD.

Visit, we beseech Thee, O LORD, this house and family, and drive far from it all the snares of the enemy. Let Thy holy angels dwell herein to preserve us in peace, and may Thy blessing be upon us for ever, through JESUS CHRIST Our LORD. Amen.

ADVENT.

MATINS.

O Thou who didst come down in the form of sinful man, Who shalt come again in glory to judge the world :

R. Glory be to Thee, O LORD.

Text. Now it is high time to awake out of sleep, for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

Hymn.

CHRIST is coming! From thy bed,
Earth-bound soul, awake and spring:
With the sun new risen to shed

Health on human suffering.

Lo! to grant a pardon free,

Comes a willing Lamb from heaven,

Sad and tearful hasten we,

One and all to be forgiven.

O, in that day, that dreadful day,
When heaven and earth shall melt away,
Be Thou, O LORD, the sinner's stay,
Help us to meet that dreadful day.

Antiphon. Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Sion, for lo! I come.

Psalm.

Stand up, O LORD, in Thy wrath, and lift up Thyself because of the indignation of Thine enemies arise up for me in the judgment that Thou hast commanded.

And so shall the congregation of the people come about Thee: for their sakes therefore lift up Thyself again.

The LORD shall judge the people; give sentence with me, O LORD: according to my righteousness and according to the innocency that is in me.

O let the wickedness of the ungodly come to an end but guide Thou the just.

:

For the righteous GOD: trieth the very hearts and reins.

My help cometh of GOD : who preserveth them that are true of heart.

GOD is a righteous judge, strong and patient: and GOD is provoked every day.

Glory be to the FATHER, and to the Son and to the HOLY GHOST;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be world without end.

Amen.

Antiphon. Sing and rejoice, O daughter of
