Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1844, By T. H. CARTER, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Massachusetts. BOSTON: PRINTED BY FREEMAN AND BOLLES, WASHINGTON STREET. 1 CINE ADVERTISEMENT. It is known that great efforts were made by the compiler of this Memoir, the late NATHANIEL HOBART, of Boston, to collect and embody all the well-authenticated and important information respecting the life and character of Emanuel Swedenborg, which was accessible to him at the time of its original publication in 1830. He was prepared to put a new and enlarged edition to press, at the time of his decease, in 1840. But that event, and the loss of the copy containing his notes and alterations, together with some other circumstances, have hitherto delayed its republication. As there seems however to be an increasing and more general desire in the public mind to know more of this illustrious and good man, and as there is no work at present so well adapted to general circulation; it has been thought best to issue another edition, with such variations and additions as subsequent developments, particularly the valuable researches of Dr. Tafel of Germany, have suggested.
