THE favour with which our former compilation-t1 "Cyclopædia of Poetical Quotations”-has been received, ar the numerous calls which we have had for an extension the plan of that work, has induced us to determine on tl issue of this companion volume, which, although exact similar in size and price, and method of arrangement, will y possess a decidedly distinctive feature in the sacred charact of all the pieces included. We hope to make it one of t] most complete collections of RELIGIOUS POETRY ever offer to the public; and cannot doubt that, as such, it will be accep able to a very large class of readers. As the matter in th volume must necessarily be arranged under a far less numb of distinct headings than that of the work just conclude there will be space for the introduction of longer piece and thus many of the most beautiful specimens of devotion poetry which are to be found in the literature of this ar other nations, can be given with little or no curtailmer Although there is much poetry of a religious charact scattered through the former volume, yet—inasmuch as is presumed that most persons who possess the one wi also desire to have the other-none of the pieces which ma there be found will be admitted into this compilation, exce in some cases where it is felt that by re-uniting the portio there arranged under several headings, so complete ar beautiful a whole can be presented that its insertion he: is almost rendered necessary.
As we wish to make our volume entirely unsectarian its character, we shall endeavour to avoid the insertion
