Mr. Case offered the following resolution, which was read and adopted:

On motion of Mr. Case, the Senate then adjourned.

In the absence of the President, Mr. Hammond took the chair as President pro tempore.

Under the direction of the President pro tempore, the Secretary called the Senate, when the following Senator appeared and answered the call:

The session was opened by prayer by the Rev. Edward G. Read, D.D., of Plainfield, N. J.

February 17th, 1919.

Owing to my inability to be present at this day's session of the New Jersey Senate, by reason of illness, and pursuant to the authority in me vested in and by Senate Rule No. 5, I do hereby designate and appoint Senator Collins B. Allen, of Salem county, to perform the duties of the Chair during the session of said Senate appointed to be held this day.

The following memorial by Mr. Sturgess was read and ordered to be spread in full upon the Minutes of the Journal: Senator Edward L. Sturgess:

RESPECTED FRIEND-At Pilesgrove Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, a body of over five hundred members, in session at Woodstown, New Jersey, First Month 28th, 1919.

The Prohibition Amendment to the Constitution of the United States was under consideration.

For nearly one hundred years the Friends have labored con15 Sen Jour

tinually and consistently to do away with the liquor traffic and the resulting intemperance, poverty, crime and want.

And now as this labor seems nearing fruition, it was decided to ask our Governor and the Legislature of our State to place New Jersey in the column of States that have adopted the said amendment.

The clerk was directed to send a copy of this minute to the Governor and to the members of the Senate and Assembly from Gloucester and Salem counties, with the request that it be presented to and read to each House.
