40 Celui qui vous reçoit, me reçoit; et celui qui me reçoit, reçoit celui qui m'a envoyé.

41 Celui qui reçoit un prophète en qualité de propliète, recevra une récompense de prophète; et qui reçoit un juste en qualité de juste, recevra une recompense de juste.

42 Et quiconque aura donné à boire seulement un verre d'eau froide à un de ces petits, parcequ'il est mon disciple, je vous dis en vérité qu'il ne perdra point sa récompense.

CHAP. XI.

Réponse de Jésus-Christ aux disciples de Jean-Baptiste. Corazin, Bethsaïda, Capernaum censurées.

APRÈS que Jésus eut achevé

de donner ces ordres à ses douze disciples, il partit de là pour aller enseigner et prêcher dans leurs villes.

2 Or Jean ayant ouï parler dans la prison de ce que JésusChrist faisoit, il envoya deux de ses disciples pour lui dire:

3 Es-tu celui qui devoit venir, ou devons-nous en attendre un autre ?

4 Et Jésus répondant leur dit: Allez et rapportez à Jean les choses que vous entendez et que vous voyez:

5 Les aveugles recouvrent la vue, les boiteux marchent, les lépreux sont nettoyés, les sourds entendent, les morts ressuscitent, et l'évangile est annoncé aux pauvres.

40 He that receiveth you, receiveth me; and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.

41 He that receiveth a prophet, in the name of a prophet, shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man, in the name of a righteous man, shall receive a righteous man's reward.

42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

CHAP. XI.

Christ's testimony of John,

AND it came to pass, when

Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence, to teach and to preach in their cities.

2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?

4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see :

5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

6 Heureux celui qui ne se scandalisera pas de moi!

7 Comme ils s'en alloient, Jésus se mit à parler de Jean au peuple, et dit: Qu'êtes-vous allés voir au désert? Etoit-ce un roseau agité du vent?

8 Mais encore, qu'êtes-vous allés voir? Etoit-ce un homme vêtu d'habits précieux? Voilà ceux qui portent des habits précieux sont dans les maisons des rois.

9 Qu'êtes-vous donc allés voir ? Un prophète? Oui, vous dis-je, et plus qu'un prophète.

10 Car c'est celui-ci de qui il est écrit: Voici j'envoie mon ange devant ta face, qui préparera ton chemin devant toi.

11 Je vous dis en vérité qu'entre ceux qui sont nés de femmes, il n'en a été suscité aucun plus grand que Jean-Baptiste; toutefois celui qui est le plus petit dans le royaume des cieux est plus grand que lui.

12 Mais depuis le temps de Jean-Baptiste jusqu'à maintenant, le royaume des cieux est forcé, et les violens le ravissent.

13 Car tous les prophètes et la loi ont prophétisé jusqu' à Jean.

14 Et si vous voulez recevoir ce que je dis, il est cet Elie qui devoit venir.

15 Que celui qui a des oreilles pour ouïr, entende.

16 Mais à qui comparerai-je cette génération? Elle ressemble aux petits enfans qui sont assis dans les places publiques, et qui crient à leurs compagnons,

17 Et leur disent: Nous vous avons joué de la flúte, et vous n'avez point dansé; nous avons chanté des plaintes devant vous, et vous n'avez point pleuré.

6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

7 And, as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? a reed shaken with the wind?

8 But what went ye out for to see? a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that wear soft clothing are in king's houses?

9 But what went ye out for to see? a prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.

10 For this is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding, he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to

come.

15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

16 But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,

17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.

18 For John came neither eat

20 Alors il se mit à faire des reproches aux villes où il avoit fait plusieurs de ses miracles, de ce qu'elles ne s'étoientpoint amendées.

21 Malheur à toi, Corazin; malheur à toi, Bethsaida! car si les miracles qui ont été faits au milieu de vous eussent été faits à Tyr et à Sidon, il y a long-tems qu'elles se seroient repenties en prenant le sac et la cendre.

22 C'est pourquoi je vous dis que Tyr et Sidon seront traitées moins rigoureusement que vous au jour du jugement.

23 Et toi Capernaum, qui as été élevée jusqu'au ciel, tu seras abaissée jusqu'en enfer; car si les miracles qui ont été faits au milieu de toi eussent été faits à Sodome, elle subsisteroit encore aujourd'hui.

24 C'est pourquoi je te dis que ceux de Sodome seront traités moins rigoureusement que toi au jour du jugement.

25 En ce tems-là Jésus prenant la parole, dit; Je te loue, ô père, Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, de ce que tu as caché ces choses aux sages et aux intelligens, et que tu les as révélées aux enfans.

26 Oui, mon Père, cela est ainsi, parceque tu l'as trouvé bon.

27 Toutes choses m'ont été données par mon Père, et nul ne connoît le Fils que le Père, et nul ne connoit le Père que le Fils, et

23 And thou, Capernaum, which' art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works which have been done in thee had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

CHAP. XII.

Du Sabbat. Miracle de Jésus-Christ. Du péché contre le St. Esprit.

EN N ce tems-là Jésus passoit par des blés un jour de sabbat; et ses disciples ayant faim, se mirent à arracher des épis, et à en manger.

2 Les Pharisiens voyant cela, lui dirent: Voilà tes disciples qui font ce qu'il n'est pas permis de faire le jour du sabbat.

3 Mais il leur dit: N'avez-vous pas lu ce que fit David, ayant faim, tant lui que ceux qui étoient avec lui:

4 Comment il entra dans la maison de Dieu, et mangea les pains de proposition, dont il n'étoit pas permis de manger, ni à lui, ni ni à lui, ni à ceux qui étoient avec lui, mais aux seuls Sacrificateurs?

5 Ou n'avez-vous pas lu dans la loi, que les Sacrificateurs, au jour du sabbat, violent le sabbat dans le temple, sans être coupables pour cela?

6 Or je vous dis qu'il y a ici quelqu'un qui est plus grand que le temple.

7 Que si vous saviez ce que signifie ceci: Je veux la miséricorde et non pas le sacrifice, vous

CHAP. XII.

Of the Pharisees' blindness.

AT that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungered, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.

2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath-day.

3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did when he was an hungered, and they that were with him;

4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shew-bread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?

5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath-days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?

6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.

7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not not sacrifice, ye would

11 Et il leur dit: Qui sera celui d'entre vous, qui ayant une brebis, si elle tombe au jour du sabbat dans une fosse, ne la prenne, et ne l'en retire?

12 Et combien un homme ne vaut-il pas mieux qu'une brebis? Il est donc permis de faire du bien dans les jours de sabbat?

13 Alors il dit à cet homme : Etends ta main. Et il l'étendit; et elle devint saine comme l'autre.

14 Là dessus les Pharisiens étant sortis, délibérèrent entr'eux comment ils le feroient périr.

15 Mais Jésus connoissant cela, partit delà; et une grande multitude le suivit, et il les guérit

tous.

16 Et il leur défendit fortement de le faire connoître.

17 De sorte que ce qui avoit été dit par Esaïe le prophète fut accompli:

18 Voici mon serviteur, que j'ai élu, mon bien-aimé, en qui mon ame a mis toute son affection: Je mettrai mon Esprit sur lui, et il annoncera la justice aux -nations ;

19 Il ne contestera point, et ne criera point, et on n'entendra point sa voix dans les places;

15 But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;

16 And charged them that they should not make him known:

17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.

19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.
