EVE OF THE ASCENSION.

After the third Collect.

O JESU, LORD of heavenly grace,
Redeemer of our guilty race,
On Thee our waiting eyes we bend,
The saint's delight, the sinner's friend!

What wondrous love prevail'd on Thee
The Bearer of our sins to be:
Thyself in sacrifice to give

That sinners might not die, but live!

Now crush'd is Satan's doleful reign,
And shiver'd is the tyrant's chain;
And Thou art in Thine own abode,
A Conqueror on the Throne of GOD.

Oh, let Thy mercy then prevail,
To heal the losses we bewail:
Oh, cheer us with Thy beaming Face,
Enrich us with Thy gifts of grace.

TO GOD the FATHER, GOD the SON,
And GOD the SPIRIT, THREE in ONE,
Let equal praise to Each be given
By men and angels, earth and heaven.

Amen.

56

Before the Sermon.

ERECT your heads, eternal gates,
Unfold to entertain

The King of Glory; see, He comes
With His celestial train.

Who is this King of Glory? who?
The LORD for strength renown'd;
In battle mighty, o'er His foes
Eternal Victor crown'd.

Erect your heads, ye gates, unfold
In state to entertain

The King of Glory; see, He comes
With all His shining train.

Who is this King of Glory? who?
The LORD of Hosts renown'd;

Of glory He alone is King,
Who is with glory crown'd.

TO FATHER, SON, and HOLY GHOST,
The GOD Whom we adore,

Be glory; as it

was, is now,

And shall be evermore. Amen.

Morning.

57

After the third Collect.

O CHRIST, Our Hope, our heart's Desire,
Redemption's only Spring;
CREATOR of the world art Thou,
Its SAVIOUR and its KING.

How vast the mercy and the love,
Which laid our sins on Thee,
And led Thee to a cruel death,
To set Thy people free!

But now the bonds of death are burst,
The Ransom has been paid:

And Thou art on Thy FATHER'S Throne,
In glorious robes arrayed.

Oh! may Thy mighty love prevail
Our sinful souls to spare!

Oh! may we come before Thy throne,
And find acceptance there!

O CHRIST, be Thou our present Joy,

Our future great Reward;

Our only glory may it be,

To glory in the Lord. Amen.

58

Before the Holy Communion.

O SAVIOUR, Who for man hast trod
The wine-press of the wrath of GOD,
Ascend, and claim again on high
Thy glory left for us to die.

The radiant clouds are now Thy Seat;
The earth lies stretch'd beneath Thy Feet;
Ten thousand thousand angels sing,
To welcome their returning KING.
The gates of Heaven obey the call,
And open to the LORD of all;

His Throne receives th' Eternal SON,
Both GoD and Man for ever ONE.

Our great HIGH PRIEST and SHEPHERD, Thou
Within the veil art entered now,

To offer there Thy death and pain,

O LAMB from earth's foundation slain !

And thence the Church, Thy chosen Bride, With Spiritual gifts supplied;

Through all her members draws from Thee
Her hidden life of Sanctity.

O Thou, our LORD, of Thy dear care,
Thy lowly members heavenward bear;
Be ours with Thee to suffer pain,
With Thee for evermore to reign.

All praise from every heart and tongue,
To our ASCENDED LORD be sung;
The FATHER'S praise let all confess,
And all the HOLY SPIRIT bless. Amen.

71

SUN of my soul! Thou SAVIOUR dear!
It is not night if Thou be near;
Oh, may no earth-born cloud arise
To hide Thee from Thy servants' eyes!
When the soft dews of kindly sleep
Our wearied eyelids gently steep,
Be our last thought, how sweet to rest
For ever on our SAVIOUR's breast.

Abide with us from morn till eve,
For without Thee we cannot live;
Abide with us when night is nigh,
For without Thee we dare not die.
If some poor wandering child of Thine
Have spurned to-day the voice divine,
Now, LORD, the gracious work begin:
Let him no more lie down in sin.

Watch by the sick; enrich the poor
With blessings from Thy boundless store:
Be every mourner's sleep to-night
Like infants' slumbers, pure and light.

Come near and bless us when we wake,
Ere through the world our way we take:
Till in the ocean of Thy love

We lose ourselves in heav'n above.

Praise GOD, from Whom all blessings flow, Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host,

Praise FATHER, SON, and HOLY GHOST.
