Prayer. 1 PRAY'R is the soul's sincere desire, Utter'd or unexprest; The motion of a hidden fire 2 Pray'r is the burg of a sigh, The upward glancing of an eye, 3 Pray'r is the simplest form of speech That infant lips can try ; Pray'r, the sublimest strains that reach 4 Pray'r is the Christian's vital breath, The Christian's native air, His watchword at the gate of death- 5 Pray'r is the contrite sinner's voice, While angels in their songs rejoice, 6 Now pray'r is made on earth alone; And JESUS, on th' eternal throne, Hymn. Spirit of Prayer. 1 JESUS, Thou sov'reign LORD of all, 2 We cannot think a gracious thought, Till Thou who call'dst a world from nought, And then we in the SPIRIT groan, 3 JESUS, regard the joint complaint Of all Thy tempted followers here! 4 To help our soul's infirmity, To heal Thy sin-sick people's care, And make our hearts a house of pray'r, The promis'd Intercessor give, And let us now Thyself receive. 5 Come in Thy pleading SPIRIT down, Hymn. Importunate and constant Prayer. 1 SHEPHERD divine, our wants relieve, On this our evil day: To all Thy tempted followers give 2 Long as our fiery trials last, 3 The SPIRIT of interceding grace To wrestle till we see Thy face, 4 Till Thou Thy perfect love impart, Be this the cry of ev'ry heart, 'I will not let Thee go. 5 I will not let Thee go, unless Thou tell Thy Name to me; With all Thy great salvation bless, And make me all like Thee. 6 Then let me on the mountain top Where faith in sight is swallow'd up, Hymn.
