2 When, touch'd with penitent remorse,
Our follies past we mourn,
With what a tenderness of love
He meets our first return!

3 From heav'n He sent His only SON
To ransom us with blood,
To snatch us from the burning pit,
When on it's brink we stood.

4 From death and hell He leads us up
By a delightful way;

And the bright beams of endless life
Doth round our path display.

5 Great GOD, we wonder, and adore;
And, to exalt such grace,

We long to learn the songs of heav'n
Ere yet we reach the place.

Hymn.

Relying on Christ alone.

1 JESUS, the sinner's Friend, to Thee, Lost and undone, for aid I flee; Weary of earth, myself, and sin: Open Thine arms, and take me in.

2 Pity, and heal my sin-sick soul; 'Tis Thou alone can'st make me whole: Fall'n, till in me Thine image shine, And lost I am, till Thou art mine. 3 The mansion for Thyself prepare, Dispose my heart by ent'ring there! "Tis this alone can make me clean; "Tis this alone can cast out sin.,

4 At last I own it cannot be

That I should fit myself for Thée:
Here then to Thee I all resign:
Thine is the work, and only Thine.

[ocr errors]

5 What shall I say Thy grace to move? LORD, I am sin,-but Thou art love : I give up ev'ry plea beside,

"LORD, I am lost, but Thou hast died.”

Hymn.

Relying on Christ alone.

1 JESUS, to Thee I now can fly,
On whom my help is laid;
Opprest by sins, I lift my eye,
And see the shadows fade.

2 Believing on my LORD, I find
A sure and present aid:
On Thee alone my constant mind
Be ev'ry moment stay'd.

3 Whate'er in me seems wise, or good,
Or strong, I here disclaim:

I wash my garments in the blood
Of the atoning LAMB.

4 JESUS, my strength, my life, my rest,
On Thee will I depend,

Till summon'd to the marriage-feast,
When faith in sight shall end.

Hymn.

Faith implored.

1 AUTHOR of faith, eternal Word!
Whose SPIRIT breathes the active flame';
Faith, like it's FINISHER and LORD,
To-day, as yesterday, the same:

2 To Thee our humble hearts aspire,
And ask the gift unspeakable:
Increase in us the kindled fire,

In us the work of faith fulfil.

3 To him that in Thy Name believes,
Eternal life with Thee is giv'n;
Into Himself He all receives,
Pardon, and holiness, and heav'n.
4 The things unknown to feeble sense,
Unseen by reason's glimm'ring ray,
With strong, commanding evidence,
Their heav'nly origin display.

5 Faith lends it's realizing light,

1

The clouds disperse, the shadows fly;
Th' Invisible appears in sight,

And GOD is seen by mortal eye.

Hymn.

A living and a dead' Faith.

MISTAKEN Souls! that dream of heav'n,
And make their empty boast

Of inward joys, and sms forgiv'n,
While they are slaves to lust.

2 Vain are our fancies, airy flights,
If faith be cold and dead;
None but a living pow'r unites
To CHRIST the living head.

3 "Tis faith that changes all the heart;
"Tis faith that works by love;
That bids all sinful joys depart,
And lifts the thoughts above.

4 Faith must obey her FATHER'S will,
As well as trust His grace;

A pard'ning GOD is jealous still
For His own holiness.

5 When from the curse He sets us free,
He makes our natures clean;
Nor would He send His SON to be
The minister of sin.

6 His SPIRIT purifies our frame,
And seals our peace with GOD;
JESUS, and His salvation, came
By water and by blood.

Hymn.

A living Faith only saving.

1 THE pray'r that flows from hearts sincere
Is pleasing to the LORD above;
While empty words offend His ear,
And His almighty vengeance move.

2 Easy indeed were it to reach

A mansion in the realms above, If swelling words and fluent speech Might serve, instead of faith and love.

3 But none shall gain that blissful place,
And GOD's unclouded glory see,
Who talk of free and sov'reign grace,
Unless that grace has made them free.

4 To us then, gracious LORD! impart
A living faith, that works by love;
A faith that purifies the heart,
And makes us meet for joys above.

Hymn.

Pleasantness of Religion.

1 HAPPY the souls to JESUS join'd,
And sav'd by grace alone!
Walking in all His ways, they find
Their heav'n on earth begun.

2 The church triumphant in Thy love,
Their mighty joys we know:
They sing the LAMB in hymns above,
And we in hymns below.

3 Thee, in Thy glorious realm, they praise, And bow before Thy throne!

We, in the kingdom of Thy grace:
The kingdoms are but one.

4 The holy to the Holiest leads:
From thence our spirits rise;
And he that in Thy statutes treads,
Shall meet Thee in the skies.
