Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: | χειρίσασθαί σε ὑπηρέτην καὶ μάρτυρα δι up in τε εἶδες, ὧν τε ὀφθήσομαί σοι· and many of the saints did I shut prison, having received authority from the Chief Priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them. Ημέρας μέσης, κατὰ τὴν ὁδὸν εἶδον, βασιλεῦ, οὐρανόθεν, ὑπὲρ τὴν λαμπρότητα τοῦ ἡλίου, περιλάμψαν με φῶς καὶ τοὺς σὺν ἐμοὶ πορευομένους. At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me. VER. 14. But rise, and stand upon they feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; VER. 17. VER. 18. ̓Ανοίξαι ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν, τοῦ ἐπιστ τρέψαι ἀπὸ σκότους εἰς φῶς, καὶ τῆς ἐξουσίας τοῦ Σατανᾶ ἐπὶ τὸν Θεὸν, τοῦ λαβεῖν αὐτοὺς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν, καὶ κλή ρον ἐν τοῖς ἡγιασμένοις, πίστει τῇ εἰς ἐμέ. a To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified & by faith, that is in me. a The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, Luke iv. 18. In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them, 2 Cor. iv. 4. Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the Πάντων δὲ καταπεσόντων ἡμῶν εἰς τὴν γῆν, ἤκουσα φωνὴν λαλοῦσαν πρός με, καὶ λέγουσαν τῇ Εβραίδι διαλέκτων Σαούλ, Σαούλ, τί με διώκεις; σκληρόν σοι προς κέντρα λακτίζειν. VER. 15. Ἐγὼ δὲ εἶπον· Τίς εἶ Κύριε; Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· terrible shall be delivered": for I will Ἐγώ εἰμι Ἰησοῦς ὃν σὺ διώκεις. contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children, Isa. xlix. 24, 25. Therefore And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou per-will I divide him a portion with the secutest. great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out bis soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgres sors: and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors, liii. 12. When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils, Luke xi. 21, 22. Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his, dear Son, Col. i. 13. And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will, 2 Tim. ii. 26. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil, 1 John iii. 8. Όθεν, βασιλεῦ ̓Αγρίππα, οὐκ ἐγενόμην ἀπειθὴς τῇ οὐρανίῳ ἐπτασίᾳ· Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: VER. 20. ̓Αλλὰ τοῖς ἐν Δαμασκῷ πρῶτον καὶ Ἱεροσολύμοις εἰς πᾶσαν τε τὴν χώραν τῆς Ἰουδαίας, καὶ τοῖς ἔθνεσιν, ἀπαγγέλλων μετανοεῖν, καὶ ἐπιστρέφειν ἐπὶ τὸν Θεὸν, ἄξια τῆς μετανοίας ἔργα πράσσοντας. • But shewed first unto them of Damascus, b and at Jerusalem,and throughout all the coasts of Judaa, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. • See on chap. ix. ver. 19, 20. Επικουρίας οὖν τυχὼν τῆς παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἄχρι τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης ἕστηκα, μαρτυρούμενος μικρῷ τε καὶ μεγάλῳ, οὐδὲν ἐκτὸς λέγων ὧν τε οἱ προφῆται ἐλάλησαν μελλόντων γίνεσθαι, καὶ Μωσῆς· God, 1 continue unto this day, witHaving therefore obtained help of nessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come : VER. 25. Εἰ παθητὸς ὁ Χριστὸς, εἰ πρῶτος ἐξ ἀναστάσεως νεκρῶν φῶς μέλλει καταγ γέλλειν τῷ λαῷ καὶ τοῖς ἔθνεσι. a That Christ should suffer, band that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles. • See on Luke xxiv. ver. 44. clause 2-4. b See on chap. ii. ver. 25-28. c See on Matt. xii. ver. 18. clause 5. VER. 24. Ταῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ ἀπολογουμένου, ὁ φῆσε της μεγάλη τῇ φωνῇ ἔφη· Μαίνη Παῦλε τὰ πολλά σε γράμματα εἰς μανίαν περιτρέπει. And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, a thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad. a See on Mark iii. ver. 21. VER. 25. φῆστε, ἀλλ ̓ ἀληθείας καὶ σωφροσύνης Ο δέ· Οὐ μαίνομαι, φησί, κράτιστε ῥήματα ἀποφθέγγομαι. But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness. VER. 26. Ἐπίσταται γὰρ περὶ τούτων ὁ βα σιλεύς· πρὸς ὃν καὶ παῤῥησιαζόμενος λαλῶν λανθάνειν γὰρ αὐτὸν τι τούτων οὐ πείθομαι οὐδέν· οὐ γάρ ἐστιν ἐν γωνίᾳ πεπραγμένον τοῦτο. For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him ; for this thing was not done in a corner. a Then said Agrippa unto Festus, This | man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Cæsar. For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Casar. Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Cæsar? unto Cæsar shalt thou go, Acts xxv. 11, 12. A. D. 62. CHAP. XXVII.-VER. 1. Ως δὲ ἐκρίθη τοῦ ἀποπλεῖν ἡμᾶς εἰς τὴν Ἰταλίαν, παρεδίδουν τόν τε Παῦλον καί τι νας ἑτέρους δεσμώτας ἑκατοντάρχῃ ὀνόματι Ιουλίω, σπείρης Σεβαστής. And when it was determined that we Paul and certain other prisoners unto should sail into Italy, they delivered one named Julius, a centurion of dugustus' hand. VER. 2. Ἐπιβάντες δὲ πλοία Αδραμυττινή, μέλλοντες πλεῖν τοὺς κατὰ τὴν ̓Ασίαν τόπους, ἀνήχθημεν, ὄντος σὺν ἡμῖν ̓Αριστ τάρχου Μακεδόνος Θεσσαλονικέας. And entering into a ship of Adramyttium, we launched, meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia ; & one Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us. a See on chap. xix. ver. 29. clause 2. VER. 3. Τῇ τε ἑτέρα κατήχθημεν εἰς Σιδώνα. Φιλανθρώπως τε ὁ Ιούλιος τῷ Παύλο χρη ἐπιμελείας τυχεῖν. σάμενος, ἐπέτρεψε πρὸς φίλους πορευθέντα, And the next day we touched at Sidon. And Julius courteously entreated Paul, and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself. VER. 4. Κἀκεῖθεν ἀναχθέντες ὑπεπλεύσαμεν τὴν Κύπρον, διὰ τὸ τοὺς ἀνέμους εἶναι ἐναν τίους. And when we had launched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary. VER. 5. Τότε πέλαγος τὸ κατὰ τὴν Κιλικίαν καὶ Παμφυλίαν διαπλεύσαντες, κατήλθε. μεν εἰς Μύρα τῆς Λυκίας. And when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia. VER. 6. Κακεῖ εὐρὼν ὁ ἑκατόνταρχος πλοῖον ̓Αλεξανδρῖνον πλέον εἰς τὴν Ἰταλίαν, ἐνεβίβασιν ἡμᾶς εἰς αὐτό. And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy; and he put us therein. Ἐν ἱκαναῖς δὲ ἡμέραις βραδυπλοῦντες, καὶ μόλις γενόμενοι κατὰ τὴν Κνίδον, μὴ προσεῶντος ἡμᾶς τοῦ ἀνέμου, ὑπεπλεύσα μεν τὴν Κρήτην κατὰ Σαλμώνην· And when we had sailed slowly many days, and scarce were come over against Cnidus, the wind not suffering us, we sailed under * Crete, over against Salmone ; * Or, Candy. VER. 8. Μόλις τε, παραλεγόμενοι αὐτὴν, ἦλθο μεν εἰς τόπον τινὰ καλούμενον Καλοὺς λιμένας, ᾧ ἐγγὺς ἦν πόλις Λασαία. And, hardly passing it, cume unto a place which is called The fair haveus; nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea. VER. 9. Ικανοῦ δὲ χρόνου διαγενόμενου, καὶ ὄντος ἤδη ἐπισφαλοῦς τοῦ πλοὺς, διὰ τὸ καὶ τὴν νηστείαν ἤδη παρεληλυθέναι, παρήνει ὁ Παῦλος, Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, a because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them, A. D. 62. that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives. * Or, injury. VER. 11. Ὁ δὲ ἑκατόνταρχος τῷ κυβερνήτῃ καὶ τῷ ναυκλήρῳ ἐπείθετο μᾶλλον ἢ τοῖς ὑπὸ τοῦ Παῦλου λεγομένοις. Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul. VER. 12. ̓Ανευθέτου δὲ τοῦ λιμένος ὑπάρχοντος πρὸς παραχειμασίαν, οἱ πλείους ἔθεντο βουλὴν ἀναχθῆναι κἀκεῖθεν, εἴ πως δύναιντο καταντήσαντες εἰς Φοίνικα παραχειμάσαι, λιμένα τῆς Κρήτης βλέποντα κατὰ Λίβα καὶ κατὰ χῶρον. And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter ; which is an haven of Crete, und lieth toward the south west and north west. VER. 13. Ὑποπνεύσαντος δὲ Νότου, δόξαντες τῆς προθέσεως κεκρατηκέναι, ἄραντες Ασσον, * The fast was on the 10th day of παρελέγοντο τὴν Κρήτην. the 7th month. a Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD. And ye shall do no work in that same day; for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the LORD your God. For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people. And whatsoever soul it he that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people, Lev. xxiii. 27-30. VER. 10. Λέγων αὐτοῖς· "Ανδρες, θεωρῶ ὅτι μετὰ ὕβρεως καὶ πολλῆς ζημίας. οὐ μόνον τοῦ φόρτου καὶ τοῦ πλοίου, ἀλλὰ καὶ τῶν ψυχῶν ἡμῶν μέλλειν ἔσεσθαι τὸν πλοῦν. And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, they sailed close by Crete. VER. 14. |
