Ελθόντες κατὰ τὴν Μυσίαν, ἐπείραζον κατὰ τὴν Βιθυνίαν πορεύεσθαι· καὶ οὐκ εἴασεν αὐτοὺς τὸ Πνεῦμα.

After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.

VER. 8.

Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's Gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord, 2 Cor. ii. 12.

VER. 9.

Καὶ ὅραμα διὰ τῆς νυκτὸς ὤφθη τῷ Παύλω. Ανήρ τις ἦν Μακεδὼν ἑστὼς παρ ρακαλῶν αὐτὸν, καὶ λέγων· Διαβὰς εἰς Μακεδονίαν, βοήθησον ἡμῖν.

And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.

VER. 10.

Ως δὲ τὸ ὅραμα εἶδεν, εὐθέως ἐζητήσα μὲν ἐξελθεῖν εἰς τὴν Μακεδονίαν, συμβι βάζοντες ὅτι προσκέκληται ἡμᾶς ὁ Κύριος εὐαγγελίσασθαι αὐτούς.

And after he had seen the vision, a immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the Gospel unto them.

a I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia, 2 Cor. ii. 13.

VER. 11.

̓Αναχθέντες οὖν ἀπὸ τῆς Τρωάδος, εὐθυ δρομήσαμεν εἰς Σαμοθρᾴκην· τῇ τε ἐπιούση εἰς Νεάπολιν·

with a straight course to Samothracia, Therefore loosing from Troas, we came and the next day to Neapolis;

VER. 12.

̓Εκεῖθέν τε εἰς Φιλίππους, στις ἐστὶ πρώτη τῆς μερίδος τῆς Μακεδονίας πόλις, κολώνια. Ημεν δὲ ἐν ταύτῃ τῇ πόλει δια τρίβοντες ἡμέρας τινάς.

And from thence to Philippi, which is * the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony : and we were in that city abiding certain days.

VER. 13.

Τῇ τε ἡμέρᾳ τῶν σαββάτων ἐξήλθομεν ἔξω τῆς πόλεως παρὰ ποταμὸν, οὗ ἀνομί

Παρελθόντες δὲ τὴν Μυσίαν, κατέβησαν ζετο προσευχὴ εἶναι· καὶ καθίσαντες έλαλοῦμεν ταῖς συνελθούσαις γυναιξί.

εἰς Τρωάδα.

And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas.

And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer

VER. 15.

Ως δὲ ἐβαπτίσθη, καὶ ὁ οἶκος αὐτῆς, παρεκάλεσε, λέγουσα· Εἰ κεκρίκατέ με πιστὴν τῷ Κυρίῳ εἶναι, εἰσελθόντες εἰς τὸν οἶκόν μου, μείνατε. Καὶ παρεβιάσατο ἡμᾶς.

a And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, b come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

VER. 16.

Εγένετο δὲ πορευομένων ἡμῶν εἰς προσευχὴν, παιδίσκην τινὰ ἔχουσαν πνεῦμα Πύθωνος, ἀπαντῆσαι ἡμῖν, ἥτις ἐργασίαν πολλὴν παρεῖχε τοῖς κυρίοις αὐτῆς, μαντευομένη.

And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel, a possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying :

VER. 17.

Αὕτη κατακολουθήσασα τῷ Παύλῳ καὶ ἡμῖν, ἔκραζε λέγουσα· Οὗτοι οἱ ἄνθρωποι, δοῦλοι τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ ὑψίστου εἰσὶν, οἵτινες καταγγέλλουσιν ἡμῖν ὁδὸν σωτηρίας.

The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, a These men are the ser vants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.

Τοῦτο δὲ ἐποίει ἐπὶ πολλὰς ἡμέρας. Διαπονηθεὶς δὲ ὁ Παῦλος, καὶ ἐπιστρέψας, τῷ πνεύματι εἶπε· Παραγγέλλω σοι ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ἐξελθεῖν ἀπ ̓ αὐτ τῆς. Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ.

And this did she many days. But the spirit, I command thee in the name Paul, being grieved, turned and said to of Jesus Christ to come out of her. ↳ And he came out the same hour.

ACTS XVI. 23-33.

VER. 23. Πολλάς τε ἐπιθέντες αὐτοῖς πληγὰς, ἔβαλον εἰς φυλακὴν, παραγγείλαντες τῷ δεσμοφύλακι ἀσφαλῶς τηρεῖν αὐτούς.

a And when they had laid many stripes upon them, b they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:

a Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep, 2 Cor. xi. 25.

b Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians, which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 2 Thess. i. 1. But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the Gospel of God, with much contention, ii. 2.

ἀναιρεῖν, νομίζων ἐκπεφευγέναι τοὺς δεσ
μίους.

And the keeper of the prison awaking
out of his sleep, and seeing the prison
doors open, he drew out his sword, and
would have killed himself, supposing that
the prisoners had been fed.

VER. 28.

Ἐφώνησε δὲ φωνῇ μεγάλη ὁ Παῦλος, λέγων· Μηδὲν πράξης σεαυτῷ κακόν· ἅπαντες γάρ ἐσμεν ἐνθάδε.

But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.

VER. 29.

Αἰτήσας δὲ φῶτα εἰσεπήδησε, καὶ ἔντρομος γενόμενος προσέπησε τον Παύλο καὶ τῷ Σίλα

Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,

VER. 30.

Καὶ προαγαγὼν αὐτοὺς ἔξω, ἔφη· Κύριοι, τί με δεῖ ποιεῖν ἵνα σωθῶ ;

And brought them out, and said, Sirs, a what must I do to be saved ? • See on Matt. xix. ver. 16.

VER. 31.

Οἱ δὲ εἶπον· Πίστευσον ἐπὶ τὸν Κύριον Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν, καὶ σωθήσῃ σὺ καὶ ὁ οἶκός σου.

And they said, a Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

VER. 34.

̓Αναγαγών τε αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτ τοῦ, παρέθηκε τράπεζαν, καὶ ἠγαλλιάσατο πανοικὶ πεπιστευκὼς τῷ Θεῷ.

And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.

VER. 35. Ἡμέρας δὲ γενομένης ἀπέστειλαν οἱ στρατηγοὶ τοὺς ῥαβδούχους, λέγοντες· Απόλυσον τοὺς ἀνθρώπους ἐκείνους.

And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go. VER. 36.

̓Απήγγειλε δὲ ὁ δεσμοφύλαξ τοὺς λόγους τούτους πρὸς τὸν Παῦλον· ὅτι ἀπεστ τάλκασιν οἱ στρατηγοί, ἵνα ἀπολυθῆτε· νῦν οὖν ἐξελθόντες πορεύεσθε, ἐν εἰρήνῃ.

And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, and go in peace.

VER. 40.

Ἐξελθόντες δὲ ἐκ τῆς φυλακῆς εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὴν Λυδίαν· καὶ ἰδόντες τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς, παρεκάλεσαν αὐτοὺς, καὶ ἐξῆλθον.

And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia; und when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.

CHAP. XVII.—VER. 1. Διοδεύσαντες δὲ τὴν ̓Αμφίπολιν καὶ ̓Απολλωνίαν, ἦλθον εἰς Θεσσαλονίκην, ὅπου ἦν ἡ συναγωγὴ τῶν Ἰουδαίων.

Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews :

VER. 2.

Κατὰ δὲ τὸ εἰωθὸς τῷ Παύλῳ εἰσῆλθε

πρὸς αὐτοὺς, καὶ ἐπὶ σαββάτα τρία διελέγετο αὐτοῖς ἀπὸ τῶν γραφῶν,

And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the Scriptures,

VER. 3.

Διανοίγων καὶ παρατιθέμενος, ὅτι τὸν Χριστὸν ἔδει παθεῖν καὶ ἀναστῆναι ἐκ νεκ

ξῶν, καὶ ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστὸς, Ἰησοῦς, ὃν ἐγὼ καταγγέλλω ὑμῖν.

Opening and alledging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead, and that a this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

VER. 4.

Καί τινες ἐξ αὐτῶν ἐπείσθησαν, καὶ προσεκληρώθησαν τῷ Παύλῳ καὶ τῷ Σίλᾳ, τῶν τε σεβομένων Ελλήνων πολὺ πλῆθος, γυναικῶν τε τῶν πρώτων οὐκ ὀλίγαι.

And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

VER. 5.

καὶ προσλαβόμενοι τῶν ἀγοραίων τινὰς Ζηλώσαντες δὲ οἱ ἀπειθοῦντες Ἰουδαῖοι, ἄνδρας πονηροὺς, καὶ ὀχλοποιήσαντες, ἔθορύβουν τὴν πόλιν· ἐπιστάντες τε τῇ οἰκίᾳ Ιάσονος, ἐζήτουν αὐτοὺς ἀγαγεῖν εἰς τὸν δῆμον.

a But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, band set all the city on an uproar, c and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

Οἱ δὲ ἀδελφοὶ εὐθέως διὰ τῆς νυκτὶς ἐξεπέμψαν τόν τε Παῦλον καὶ τὸν Σίλας εἰς Βέροιαν· οἵτινες παραγενόμενοι, εἰς τὴν συναγωγὴν τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἀππεσαν.

And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

VER. 11.

Ουτοι δὲ ἦσαν εὐγενέστερος τῶν ἐν Θεσσαλονίκη· οἵτινες ἐδέξαντο τὸν λόγον μετὰ πάσης προθυμίας, τὸ καθ ̓ ἡμέραν ἀνακ ρίνοντες τὰς γραφὰς, εἰ ἔχοι ταῦτα οὕτως.

These were more noble than those in

Thessalonica, in that they received the
word with all readiness of mind, and
those things were so.

VER. 12.

Πολλοὶ μὲν οὖν ἐξ αὐτῶν ἐπίστευσαν, καὶ τῶν Ἑλληνίδων γυναικῶν τῶν εἰσχη μόνων, καὶ ἀνδρῶν οὐκ ὀλίγοι.

Therefore many of them believed: also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

VER. 13.

'Ως δὲ ἔγνωσαν οἱ ἀπὸ τῆς Θεσσαλο νίκης Ἰουδαῖοι, ὅτι καὶ ἐν τῇ Βεροίας και τηγγέλη ὑπὸ τοῦ Παύλου ὁ λόγος τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἦλθον κἀκεῖ, σαλεύοντες τοὺς ὄχλους.

a But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

a For ye, brethren, became followers of the Churches of God which in Judæa are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews; Who both killed the Ἐτάραξαν δὲ τὸν ὄχλον καὶ τοὺς πολι- Lord Jesus and their own prophets, τάρχας ἀκούοντας ταῦτα.

VER. 8.

And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

VER. 9.

Καὶ λαβόντες τὸ ἱκανὸν παρὰ τοῦ Ἰάσονος καὶ τῶν λοιπῶν, ἀπέλυσαν αὐτούς.

and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men; Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway; for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost, 1 Thess. ii. 14-16.

VER. 14.

And when they had taken security of Εὐθέως δὲ τότε τὸν Παῦλον ἐξαπέστει Jason, and of the other, they let them go. | λαν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ πορεύεσθαι ὡς ἐπὶ τὴν θά
