for ever, neither will I be always wroth; for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made. For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him: I hid me, and was wroth, and he went on frowardly in the way of his heart. I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners, lvii. 16-18. Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a pleasant child? for since I spake against him, I do earnestly remember him still; therefore my bowels are troubled for him I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the LORD, Jer. xxxi. 20. Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his

anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities : and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea, Mic. vii. 18, 19.

VER. 21.

Εἶπε δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ υἱός· Πάτερ, ἥμαρτον εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν, καὶ ἐνώπιόν σου, καὶ οὐκέτι εἰμὶ ἄξιος κληθῆναι υἱός σου.

And the son said unto him, aFather, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son.

VER. 22.

Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ὅτι ὁ ἀδελφός σου ἥκει· καὶ ἔθυσεν ὁ πατήρ σου τὸν μόσχον τὸν σιτευτὸν, ὅτι ὑγιαίνοντα αὐτὸν ἀπέAaßsv.

And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.

And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, a and all that I have is thine.

And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? a give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward.

Καὶ ἐπήνεσεν ὁ κύριος τὸν οἰκονόμον τῆς ἀδικίας, ὅτι φρονίμως ἐποίησεν· ὅτι οἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου φρονιμώτεροι ὑπὲρ τοὺς υἱοὺς τοῦ φωτὸς εἰς τὴν γενεὰν τὴν ἑαυτῶν εἰσι.

And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.

a While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them, John xii. 36. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light, Eph. v. 8. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness, 1 Thess. v. 5.

VER. 9.

Κἀγὼ ὑμῖν λέγω· Ποιήσατε ἑαυτοῖς φί λους ἐκ τοῦ μαμωνᾶ τῆς ἀδικίας· ἵνα ὅταν ἐκλίπητε, δέξωνται ὑμᾶς εἰς τὰς αἰωνίους σκηνάς.

And I say unto you, * Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they

VER. 10.

He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also

And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man's, who shall give you that which is your own?

VER. 13.

Οὐδεὶς οἰκέτης δύναται δυσὶ κυρίως δου λεύειν· ἡ γὰρ τὸν ἕνα μισήσει, καὶ τὸν ἕτε ρον ἀγαπήσει· ἢ ἑνὸς ἀνθέξεται, καὶ τοῦ ἑτέρου καταφρονήσει. Οὐ δύνασθε Θεῷ δου λεύειν καὶ μαμωνά.

a No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LoRD: I am full of the burntofferings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats. When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts? Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with: it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them. And when ye spread forth your hands, I will

hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear your hands are full of blood. Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow, Isa. i. 10

17. I hate, I despise your feastdays, and 1 will not smell in your solemn assemblies. Though ye offer me burnt-offerings, and your meatofferings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace-offerings of your fat beasts. Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols. But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream, Amos v. 21-24.

VER. 16.

Ο νόμος καὶ οἱ πρωφῆται ἕως Ἰωάννου ἀπὸ τότε ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ εὐαγγελίζε ται, καὶ πᾶς εἰς αὐτὴν βιάζεται,

And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

VER. 25.

Εἶπε δὲ ̓Αβραάμ· Τέκνον, μνήσθητι ὅτι ἀπέλαβες σὺ τὰ ἀγαθά σου ἐν τῇ ζωῇ σου,

therefore a rest to the people of God, Heb. iv. 9. These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, Rev. vii. 14-17. And I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away, xxi. 3, 4.
