CHAPTER I.

Shortly after the conversation narrated at the close of the preceding volume, Mr. Fenton requested of Mr. Clement an account of the manner in which his money had been disposed of among the prisoners in the Fleet.First, Sir, he replied, you will see, by this list, that, for little more than the 500 pounds allotted, were leased ninetyfive prisoners, whose debts amounted from forty shillings These, in the geneto about twelve pounds per man.
