CAPUT I.

: DILIGITE justitiam, qui judicatis terram. Sentite de Domino in bonitate, et in simplicitate 2 cordis quaerite illum; quoniam invenitur ab his, qui non tentant illum, apparet autem eis qui fidem habent in illum. 3 Perversae enim cogitationes separant a Deo; probata autem virtus corripit insipientes. Quoniam in malevolam animam non introibit sapientia, nec habitabit in corpore subdito peccatis. 5 Spiritus enim sanctus disciplinae effugiet fictum, et auferet se a cogitationibus quae sunt sine in

ΚΕΦΑΛΑΙΟΝ Α'. 1'ΑΓΑΠΗΣΑΤΕ δικαιοσύνην οἱ κρίνοντες τὴν γῆν, φρονήσατε περὶ τοῦ Κυρίου ἐν ἀγαθότητι,

καὶ ἐν ἁπλότητι καρδίας ζητή σατε αὐτόν·

2 ὅτι εὑρίσκεται τοῖς μὴ πειράζουσιν αὐτὸν,

ἐμφανίζεται δὲ τοῖς μὴ ἀπι

στοῦσιν αὐτῷ.

3 σκολιοὶ γὰρ λογισμοὶ χωρίζουσιν ἀπὸ Θεοῦ, δοκιμαζομένη τε ἡ δύναμις ἐλέγε

χει τοὺς ἄφρονας.

ὅτι εἰς κακότεχνον ψυχὴν οὐκ εἰσελεύσεται σοφία,

οὐδὲ κατοικήσει ἐν σώματι και τάχρεῳ ἁμαρτίας.

5 ἅγιον γὰρ πνεῦμα παιδείας φεύξεται δόλον,

καὶ ἀπαναστήσεται ἀπὸ λογι σμῶν ἀσυνέτων,

without understanding, and 1will not abide when unrighteousness 6 cometh in. For wisdom is a loving spirit; and will not acquit a blasphemer of his words: for God is witness of his reins, and a true beholder of his heart, and a hearer of his 7 tongue. For the Spirit of the

Lord filleth the world: and that which containeth all things hath knowledge of the voice. 8 Therefore he that speaketh unrighteous things cannot be hid: neither shall vengeance, when it punisheth, pass by him. 9 For inquisition shall be made into the counsels of the ungodly and the sound of his words shall come unto the Lord for the manifestation of 1o his wicked deeds. For the ear

of jealousy heareth all things: and the noise of murmurings II is not hid. Therefore beware of murmuring, which is unprofitable; and refrain your tongue from backbiting for there is no word so secret, that shall go for nought and the mouth that belieth 5 slayeth the

6 veniente iniquitate. Benignus est enim spiritus sapientiae, et non liberabit maledicum a labiis suis, quoniam renum illius testis est Deus, et cordis illius scrutator est verus, et linguae ejus

7 auditor. Quoniam spiritus Domini replevit orbem terrarum; et hoc, quod continet omnia, 8 scientiam habet vocis. Propter hoc qui loquitur iniqua non potest latere, nec praeteriet il9 lum corripiens judicium. In cogitationibus enim impii interrogatio erit; sermonum autem illius auditio ad Deum veniet, ad correptionem iniquito tatum illius. Quoniam auris zeli audit omnia, et tumultus murmurationum non abscondeII tur. Custodite ergo vos a murmuratione quae nihil prodest, et a detractione parcite linguae, quoniam sermo obscurus in vacuum non ibit, os autem quod mentitur occidit animam.

12 Nolite zelare mortem in errore vitae vestrae, neque acquiratis perditionem in operibus 13 manuum vestrarum. Quoniam

Deus mortem non fecit, nec laetatur in perditione vivorum. 14 Creavit enim, ut essent omnia ; et sanabiles fecit nationes orbis terrarum; et non est in illis medicamentum exterminii, nec inferorum regnum in terra. 15 Justitia enim perpetua est, et 16 immortalis. Impii autem manibus et verbis accersierunt illam ; et aestimantes illam amicam, defluxerunt, et sponsiones posuerunt ad illam ; quoniam digni sunt qui sint ex parte illius.

12 Μὴ ζηλοῦτε θάνατον ἐν πλάνῃ ζωῆς ὑμῶν,

μηδὲ ἐπισπᾶσθε ὄλεθρον ἔργοις χειρῶν ὑμῶν·

13 ὅτι ὁ Θεὸς θάνατον οὐκ ἐποίη

σεν,

οὐδὲ τέρπεται ἐπ' ἀπωλείᾳ ζώντων.

14 ἔκτισε γὰρ εἰς τὸ εἶναι τὰ πάντα,

καὶ σωτήριοι αἱ γενέσεις τοῦ κόσμου,

καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν αὐταῖς φάρμακον ὀλέθρου,

οὔτε ᾅδου βασίλειον ἐπὶ γῆς. 15 δικαιοσύνη γὰρ ἀθάνατός ἐστιν· 16 ἀσεβεῖς δὲ ταῖς χερσὶ καὶ τοῖς λόγοις προσεκαλέσαντο αὐτὸν,

φίλον ἡγησάμενοι αὐτὸν ἐτά

κησαν,

καὶ συνθήκην ἔθεντο πρὸς αὐ τὸν,

ὅτι ἄξιοί εἰσι τῆς ἐκείνου μερίδος είναι.

12 soul. Seek not death in the error of your life and pull not upon yourselves destruction with the works of your hands. 13 For God made not death: neit ther hath he pleasure in the 14 destruction of the living. For

he created all things, that they might have their being: and the generations of the world were healthful; and there is no poison of destruction in them, nor the kingdom of death upon 15 the earth: (For righteousness is 16 immortal:) But ungodly men with their works and words called it to them: for when they thought to have it their friend, they consumed to nought, and made a covenant with it, because they are worthy to take part with it.

2 For we are born at all adventure and we shall be hereafter as though we had never been : for the breath in our nostrils is as smoke, and a little spark in the moving of our heart: 3 Which being extinguished, our body shall be turned into ashes, and our spirit shall vanish as the soft' air, And our name shall be forgotten in time, and no man shall have our works in remembrance, and our life shall pass away as the trace of a cloud, and shall be dispersed as a mist, that is driven away with the beams of the sun, and overcome 2 with the heat thereof. 5 For our time is a very shadow that passeth away; and after

our end there is no returning:

2 ὅτι αὐτοσχεδίως ἐγεννήθημεν, καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο ἐσόμεθα ὡς

οὐχ ὑπάρξαντες

ὅτι καπνὸς ἡ πνοὴ ἐν ῥισὶν ἡμῶν,

καὶ ὁ λόγος σπινθὴρ ἐν κινήσει καρδίας ἡμῶν,

3 οὗ σβεσθέντος τέφρα ἀποβήσεται τὸ σῶμα,

καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα διαχυθήσεται ὡς χαῦνος ἀήρ.

καὶ τὸ ὄνομα ἡμῶν ἐπιλησθή

σεται ἐν χρόνῳ,

καὶ οὐθεὶς μνημονεύσει τῶν ἔργων ἡμῶν·

καὶ παρελεύσεται ὁ βίος ἡμῶν ὡς ἴχνη νεφέλης, καὶ ὡς ὁμίχλη διασκεδασθή

σεται,

διωχθεῖσα ὑπὸ ἀκτίνων ἡλίου καὶ ὑπὸ θερμότητος αὐτοῦ βαρυνθεῖσα.

5 σκίας γὰρ πάροδος ὁ καιρὸς ἡμῶν,

καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἀναποδισμὸς τῆς τελευτῆς ἡμῶν,

ὅτι κατεσφραγίσθη, καὶ οὐδεὶς ἀναστρέφει.

6 δεῦτε οὖν καὶ ἀπολαύσωμεν τῶν ὄντων ἀγαθῶν,

καὶ χρησώμεθα τῇ κτίσει ὡς νεότητι σπουδαίως.

η οἴνου πολυτελοῦς καὶ μύρων πλησθώμεν,

Umbrae enim transitus est tempus nostrum, et non est reversio finis nostri; quoniam consignata est, et nemo 6 revertitur. Venite ergo, et fruamur bonis quae sunt, et utamur creatura tanquam in
